On the one hand, the Kings outclassed their opposition by a fair margin, something they haven't done in a very long time, so this game provides some reason to celebrate. A further reason to celebrate was Ryan Smyth having a darn good game and putting the Kings up 3-1 early in the third period when the result was still in doubt. Although I didn't count that goal as a scoring chance, it was vintage Smytty who got the goal on a wraparound (Peter Budaj should be ashamed).
On the other hand, the Kings lost Anze Kopitar to a broken ankle just two games after losing Justin Williams. When you consider how much the Kings have been relying on that top line, this is terrible news, and given their schedule over the last several games, it's a good thing they won against the Avalanche. It will be interesting to see how the Kings cope with the loss of Kopitar. When Williams went down, Oscar Moller was called up to replace his minutes, both at EV and on the PP, but now with Kopitar down, I expect a much bigger shuffle, although the team hasn't called anyone up from Manchester.

For those who'd like a definition: a scoring chance is defined as a clear play directed toward the opposing net from a dangerous scoring area - loosely defined as the top of the circle in and inside the faceoff dots, though sometimes slightly more generous than that depending on the amount of immediately-preceding puck movement or screens in front of the net. Blocked shots are generally not included but missed shots are. A player is awarded a scoring chance anytime he is on the ice and someone from either team has a chance to score. He is awarded a "chance for" if someone on his team has a chance to score and a "chance against" if the opposing team has a chance to score.
