This game featured some very nice things from the Kings, despite the fact that they were again outchanced at even strength and overall. The top line was again very good, Brad Richardson played well on the fourth line, and the line of Michal Handzus, Alexei Ponikarovsky, and Wayne Simmonds was as good as they've been since I started watching this team. Matt Greene had his best game by far making some astute blocks with his stick and covering admirably for his partner, Alec Martinez on a couple of occasions when Martinez was overly aggressive. Of course, there were still negatives, the most glaring being the Rob Scuderi - Jack Johnson partnership was again destroyed going by the chances and by eye. I don't know if they've looked like this all year, but if they have, consider me surprised that Dean Lombardi didn't go out and get himself some help on the blueline.
The Kings next game is tonight against San Jose at 8:30. I'll have a GDT up shortly, and I might even be around for the game itself! I should also be able to get the game against Anaheim logged and up later today, which will bring us close to back on track for the scoring chances. The chances for this one are after the jump.
For those who'd like a definition: a scoring chance is defined as a clear play directed toward the opposing net from a dangerous scoring area - loosely defined as the top of the circle in and inside the faceoff dots, though sometimes slightly more generous than that depending on the amount of immediately-preceding puck movement or screens in front of the net. Blocked shots are generally not included but missed shots are. A player is awarded a scoring chance anytime he is on the ice and someone from either team has a chance to score. He is awarded a "chance for" if someone on his team has a chance to score and a "chance against" if the opposing team has a chance to score.
