This wasn't a good game for the Kings' top line, and especially for Drew Doughty, and when this team's best players are bad, the team looks really bad. The Kings had no chances in the first period, and only three chances in the second. At one point, with the Blues up 1-0, St. Louis raced in on a (seriously) five-on-one, but failed to score. Incredibly, this gave Alexei Ponikarovsky a breakaway heading the other way, and I thought for sure he'd score, but Jaroslav Halak made the save and justice was preserved. Through two periods, the team was outshot 30-6 and the club was booed off the ice before the second intermission. The only player keeping the team in the game was Jonathan Quick, although even he had begun to show some cracks, letting a bad-angled shot (no scoring chance) sneak by just before the end of the second, which gave the Blues a two-goal lead. And that was nothing compared to the eighty-footer he let slip by in the third, a period that both teams slept through with the Blues coming out of it +2 on the scoreboard. It was telling that the fans were all over quick giving him sarcastic applause during the game's last ten minutes - the loss wasn't his fault, but the fans were angry, and the goalie presented a convenient target for their wrath. This was easily the most lopsided game I've seen this season... and I usually watch the Oilers.
The Kings next game is tonight against Anaheim at 8:30, and I'll have a GDT up shortly, but won't be around to watch the game live. I've also got the last game of their road trip against the Predators to log, and hopefully that one will be up tomorrow. Scoring chances from this massacre after the jump.
For those who'd like a definition: a scoring chance is defined as a clear play directed toward the opposing net from a dangerous scoring area - loosely defined as the top of the circle in and inside the faceoff dots, though sometimes slightly more generous than that depending on the amount of immediately-preceding puck movement or screens in front of the net. Blocked shots are generally not included but missed shots are. A player is awarded a scoring chance anytime he is on the ice and someone from either team has a chance to score. He is awarded a "chance for" if someone on his team has a chance to score and a "chance against" if the opposing team has a chance to score. Finally, a big thanks to Vic Ferrari for making the whole damn thing possible with his awesome scripts.
