Well, we're starting to get into a bit of a groove here now. Over the last couple of weeks I've taken a close look at two periods of hockey, one between the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars and the other between the Oilers and the Columbus Blue Jackets. I noted every time an Oiler player touched the puck and what that player did with it and as I've each time I've done it I've been able to notice a few things that I then follow during the next few Oiler games. The process is somewhat labour-intensive and so I've decided to take the first periods of several different games rather than doing games in their entirety (and doing fewer of them!). Today marks the first time I'll have looked at an Oilers road game, though, there really weren't too many stoppages in play in the first period in the game between the Bruins and Oilers on October 31st. We'll take a look at the results after the jump.
Just as with the first couple of posts, I'll include a legend in case you're interested in reading all of the play-by-play data. I've actually done things a bit differently this time hoping that it will make the play-by-play a little bit more complete and easier to follow. That said, I know a lot of people will just want a broad overview of the data so I'll post some of my own impressions first. As always, it's important to remember that we're only really talking about three periods of hockey and so what gets noted here are "things to look for" as we watch the games and not definitive conclusions about how any individual player will perform (or has performed) over a longer period of time:
From the Bruins: Zdeno Chara is a monster. He was often out there against the top line and was totally neutralizing both Penner and Hemsky every time they were on the ice. To be honest, the "Kid Line" had more success against him because all they tried to use was speed. Chara is too good to be fooled by Hemsky's dangles and too strong to be outmuscled by Penner but he didn't seem to deal as well with quick non-physical attacks. Now, it's not as though Cogliano has Chara's number or something silly like that. In fact, the Bruins controlled the play for long stretches when the "Kid Line" was out there. But if you're one of Boston's main rivals and you have some fast darty players that are actually really good, I could see them being very effective against the big man.
From the Bruins II: They are generally more effective with their dump-ins than the Oilers are. Each dump seemed to have either a planned change or at least one guy already on the move into the offensive zone. The Oilers, on the other hand, tended to dump the puck in before they have anyone close enough to the blue line to have a realistic chance at claiming the puck. Not every time but far more often than Boston.
#19 - Patrick O'Sullivan - I thought that he played better in this game but that guy does like throwing the puck to the front of the net. I'm feeling pretty sure that beauty pass to Dustin Penner was a fluke since he does that spin-fire pass/shot quite a bit and often it's to no one in particular. Still, O'Sullivan is good at recognizing what the dangerous areas are in teh defensive zone and making sure he keeps the puck away from them. I thought that he was generally in good position in the defensive zone in this period which is not a strength of all of the Oiler forwards.
#27 - Dustin Penner - He didn't have his best period of hockey but he wasn't bad either. Penner didn't generate much of anything scoring chance wise but he did battle hard all period and he was certainly trying to get things done every play. He seemed to have difficulty relying on his strength since he was often out against Chara who is probably even stronger. Still, for someone who was criticized for taking too many nights off last season, this wasn't an example of that happening.
#34 - Fernando Pisani - He didn't look quite up to speed this game but he still had some guile along the boards. This was his first game back from injury so hopefully he's able to improve on his performance. If not, he really won't do much to help the team.
#41 - Taylor Chorney - Made one really dangerous pass to Hemsky where I'm glad that Hemsky bailed instead of trying to take the pass but was otherwise pretty solid. He isn't afraid to either carry the puck or shoot it and he'll generally try to retain possession. I'm surprised that he's not a more dominant player at the AHL level.
#49 - Theo Peckham - Well, he doesn't try to do things he can't do. So that's good. He doesn't actually make very many terrible plays but all period he was almost getting beat on the rush and a lot of the time he was moving the puck as quickly as possible to open space instead of to a teammate. Sometimes that's the right play but Peckham does it a lot and quite often the puck just ends up right back in the defensive zone.
#77 - Tom Gilbert - I don't know for sure if this is what people mean when they say someone has good "hockey sense" but Tom Gilbert is constantly in the right place to get pucks. He's not a "cycle breaker" in the traditional sense but he seems to often have a good idea of where the puck is going off an opposition stick before it's put there and he gets to that spot.
#83 - Ales Hemsky - He was off this period, wasn't able to make anything happen and wasn't protecting the puck like he has previously. His passes weren't as accurate as usual and Chara just gave him fits all period (and all afternoon if my memory does not deceive me).
#89 - Sam Gagner - He was making a consistent effort to shoot the puck all game. I'm not sure if the "Kid Line" decided ahead of time that Gagner would be the shooter but every time Gagner had the puck in a potential scoring area (and sometimes when his chance to score was quite low) he was shooting the puck. The "Kid Line" didn't get dominated in this period as much as I remember for the Boston game as a whole so I would guess this was their best period of the game.
If you want to read through all of the data I've collected, it's posted below. Anytime I thought a "mistake" was made I bolded the text. As per Bruce's excellent suggestion, anytime I thought a player made a "superior" (as opposed to "routine") play I italicized the text. Obviously these are all judgment calls and you may have seen any one particualr play differently. Every time Dennis King tracked a scoring chance, that's been noted. All of the players are listed by jersey number and not name so I'll provide a legend here. I've also used several other abbreviations and conventions that I'll explain here:
