Trivial Oilers News? We Invented Trivial Oilers News

The Telegraph Journal reports that defenseman Anthony Pisano will be reporting to the Edmonton Oilers rookie camp on September 11th. Pisano is a 6'6", 230 lb enforcer who recorded 219 PIM (and 5 assists!) last year in the Maritime Jr. A Hockey League. His QMJHL rights are owned by the Saint John Sea Dogs.

I was initially very excited about this, with the possible Pisano-Pisani play-by-play implications. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this rookie camp is as close as Pisano gets to the NHL level. He's a 19-year old who has yet to make his QMJHL debut, and may not this year. While Sea Dogs GM Jacques Beaulieu is optimistic the Oilers will tell Pisano that the QMJHL is his best option development-wise, Pisano's Jr. A coach has stated that regular playing time and completion of high school are priorities for Pisano (which probably isn't a bad idea, given the likelihood of an NHL career at this stage).

Still, if there's one universal truth to hockey, it's that 6'6" defensemen will keep getting chances for as long as they're willing to lace up a pair of skates.
