Adam Proteau has another nice piece on Walt Poddubny's death up at The Hockey News. A comparison to The Wrestler crossed my mind, too, although we really do not have many of the details involved, including his cause of death, and illness may have played a factor. Poddubny made about $850,000 in his final three, injury-plagued years in the NHL, and would have likely made at least that much in his first eight or so professional seasons. That seems like a small fortune to most, although he hadn't cashed an NHL paycheque in 17 years. In Proteau's story, Rick Vaive notes that veteran players receive $250,000 as their pension when they turn 50 years old. Poddubny was 49.
