That sort of consistency in two separate interviews sends a clear message: Devan Dubnyk won’t have to wait for Khabibulin to falter this season. While Tambellini makes no assurances about how the games are to be split between the two goaltenders, it seems probable that Tambellini has come to the same conclusion the vast majority of the fans have: Devan Dubnyk should be the Oilers’ starting goaltender out of the gate.

That's Jonathan Willis at the Cult of Hockey discussing Steve Tambellini's consistent message about the Oilers' goaltenders.

Say Petiot is on the big club. Sure, he’ll likely catch some scratches (as a young player is likely to do), but it’d likely be a lot less than…a third goaltender. I’m sure that Jeff Deslauriers and Devan Dubnyk are clawing for the number two spot at this time, but wouldn’t it be beneficial to either one of them to have some time playing in the AHL, rather than just sit and rot?

All of a sudden," Lowe said, "you’ve got all these guys who are vying for top-six spots.

Not this again. Where have I heard this before? Oh, right. 2007. "What happened was, all of a sudden, we got a lot of defencemen. We traded for Grebeshkov. We signed (Dick) Tarnstrom. We traded for Pitkanen. We signed (Sheldon) Souray. Then, I'm thinking, 'Holy mackerel, we've got a lot of guys here,' " said Lowe. Either Kevin Lowe doesn't understand the definition of "sudden" or he's a goldfish.

"We have 18 games until the Olympic break. We are going to use this time to find out who wants to be here and who doesn't. This is our big evaluation stage to determine our long-term future."

Steve Tambellini comments on near-term roster decisions. I'm not an expert personnel man by any means, but shouldn't this "big evaluation stage" have taken place over the course of the last eighteen months? Are we to believe that two training camps and 126 games aren't enough to properly evaluate players, but that the next eighteen games are going to make all of the difference?

The Oilers were 25th in the NHL in faceoff winning percentage last season, but rather than address the problem, Oilers management ignored it and hoped it would go away. It didn't. Edmonton is 28th in the league in faceoffs this year. Losing key draws is one of the big reasons they're struggling on the power play and penalty kill.

From Yahoo's News and Notes on the team. Even Yahoo knows how to start fixing this.

Edmonton's Kevin Lowe is at tonight's game, Oilers have been at all four games on this road trip

Erik Erlendsson, of the Tampa Tribune This is one that has something to it, unless Lowe has coincidentally decided he wants to see the arena plans of all of Tampa's opponents on this road trip. These kind of set-ups frighten me because I don't really see much from Tampa that I'd be willing to take on, and I can't imagine who Tampa would want in return. Do any of our esteemed readership have an idea here?
