The Dany Heatley trade: One year later

One year after the Dany Heatley trade request, both the Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks have let the dust settle. A look back at the trade's players and how they performed.

Heatley Deal Finally Done.

Dany Heatley and a 5th round pick to San Jose for Jonathan Cheechoo, Milan Michalek and a 2nd round pick. Two points: 1. We're glad the "Heatley To Blues" rumors never panned out. Not the right guy, not the right time for this team. 2. We feel for John Buccigross, who took a ton of heat for reporting that a three-way Heatley trade was a done deal earlier this week. Bucci is a good hockey guy, but anytime you report a rumor like that you're asking for it.

Heatley Traded to the Sharks (for real this time)

San Jose has acquired Dany Heatley (plus a 5th rounder) for Cheechoo, Michalek and a 2nd round draft pick. Honestly, I think that's a marginal return for Heatley, but clearly there wasn't a lot out there. Michalek is a decent player (but not anywhere near the same level), Cheechoo is a salary dump and a 2nd rounder is a 30% chance at another NHL player.

Dany heatley traded to the Sharks

With Marleau headed to LA and Frolov/Stoll headed to Ottawa. I told you Patrick wasn't going to be a Shark much longer... Update from Robert Or maybe not... It was easy to point and laugh at the Oilers earlier this summer when there was a premature leaking of their trade offer to Ottawa, but here we go again. Can't anyone in this scenario get their act together? And who passed this nonsense on to Buccigross? Total fiasco.

Quantifying Heatley's discontent

Heatley spoke. We listened. And in reading into what he's given us to go on, it seems there are some hurt feelings over two minutes in ice time under new coach Cory Clouston.

Jason Spezza: Ottawa's newest hero

If Dany Heatley's the villain, Jason Spezza's going to come out of the whole debacle as the hero.

So the prevailing thought is that, at some point, the Senators will have to cut their losses and perhaps make an inferior deal (to Edmonton's offer) that Heatley would find acceptable, just to rid themselves of their problem. That, though, presumes that the Senators' ownership and management are more concerned about practicality than revenge or making an example of Heatley. Either way, it's likely to get ugly.
