Regular readers know of our affinity for NHL Equivalency as developed by the marvelous Gabriel Desjardins.  From our regular feature on the NHLE progress of the Oilers' prospects, to the look at Mats Zuccarello-Aasen, to our statistical breakdowns in our Top 25 under 25, the Copper & Blue loves the NHLE metric.  From the link, we know the conversion values, so it's interesting to note the IIHF's rankings of the European leagues.  The rankings below were taken from the IIHF website.

Edmonton's latest in a long line of extremely talented but troubled defensemen, (Sheldon Souray's injury and personal issues, Joni Pitkanen's perceived effort and locker room issues) Ryan Whitney, has been getting a bit of a mixed reaction in the Edmonton press since his arrival.  I'll start with the bad.  Robin Brownlee of Oilers nation wrote an article on Whitney's foot injuries the other day.  I link to it out of common courtesy as I'll reference it, but I don't recommend reading it.  Brownlee wades into the world of Yellow Journalism by writing all kinds of overtures about Whitney's health and purposefully throwing a scare into Oiler fans over what is essentially, not news.

Oilers News, Notes and Links for Sunday March 7th

Burn out the day
Burn out the night
I can't see no reason to put up a fight
I'm living for giving the devil his due

--Blue Oyster Cult, Burnin' For You

The deadline has passed and the optimists took the moves as some sort of hope.  The realists look and see a condemned building.  It's going to be burned to the ground by a fellow that may not have a match.

Evernote has some really interesting stuff this time around:

Via @JonathanWillis on Twitter the Oilers have plucked 25-year-old forward Ryan Jones off of waivers from the Nashville Predators.  Jones is a gritty fourth line player with physical prowess and some skating problems.  He's a fan-favorite in both Minnesota (where he began his career) and Nashville.

Tyler looks at the bizarre nature of this move, as apparently the Oilers have had interest for some time, but didn't get him included in the trade.  Read Tyler's piece, it's very interesting.

Trade Deadline Day - It's Hockey Christmas

Ethan Moreau at Home

Ethan Moreau at Home

Deadline day is upon us.  While Oiler fans are split between hoping for a miracle and hoping that Steve Tambellini doesn't infect Sam Gagner with the Ebola virus, other fans actually get to enjoy the trade deadline.  To get a sense of where the Oilers stand, read my take on the trade value of the each player on the roster (on Denis Grebeshkov, by "high round pick" I didn't mean 50+), a review of the trade rumors we've all heard about, check out the Sharks trade targets, take a look at what the Coyotes think about Ethan Moreau, and then there are the always pleasurable thoughts on the Denis Grebeshkov trade.

The Oilers End Their Mysterious Relationship With Cody Wild

Word from the Oilers this afternoon that they've traded Cody Wild to the Boston Bruins in exchange for forward Matt Marquardt.

Marquardt is a big player.  Finally, eleven months after promising Oilers' fans size and toughness, Steve Tambellini delivers in a big, big way.

Marquardt appeared in 71 games in 2008-2009, scoring nine goals and thirteen assists and a -9  against the tough competition for the Bruins.  He was in the 85th percentile in the entire AHL for qualcomp, so there's that.  In 2009-2010, he's appeared in 42 games with one goal and nine assists and a -9 rating (no qualcomp data available).  He's very similar to Colin McDonald in that regard.

Wild recorded eighteen points in 59 games last year and fourteen points in 37 games this year, outscoring Marquardt in total and per game.  However, as the old axiom suggests, you can never have enough .283 ppg scorers in the AHL as long as they are big and tough.

The move brings to a close one of the more bizarre prospect relationships that we've seen from the Edmonton Oilers, and that's saying a mouthful.

Khabibulin Faces 30 Day Jail Sentence

As per Joanne Ireland in the Sun, Nikolai Khabibulin is now facing "extreme DUI" charges. His pre-trial court appearance has been scheduled for March 16.  According to the Arizona Revised Statutes on Extreme DUI:

A. It is unlawful for a person to drive or be in actual physical control of a vehicle in this state if the person has an alcohol concentration as follows within two hours of driving or being in actual physical control of the vehicle and the alcohol concentration results from alcohol consumed either before or while driving or being in actual physical control of the vehicle:

1. 0.15 or more but less than 0.20.

So the arresting officer alleges that Khabibulin's blood-alcohol level was above .15, but below .20.  It doesn't seem to match with the statement from Khabibulin's camp about a glass of wine with dinner, though one can't expect a suspect to convict himself in the press.  If convicted, the statute directs punishment to include:

D. A person who is convicted of a violation of this section:

1. Shall be sentenced to serve not less than thirty consecutive days in jail

2. Shall pay a fine of not less than two hundred fifty dollars,

3. Shall pay an additional assessment of two hundred fifty dollars.

4. May be ordered by a court to perform community restitution.

5. Shall be required by the department, on receipt of the report of conviction, to equip any motor vehicle the person operates with a certified ignition interlock device pursuant to section 28-3319. In addition, the court may order the person to equip any motor vehicle the person operates with a certified ignition interlock device for more than twelve months beginning on the date of reinstatement of the person's driving privilege following a suspension or revocation or on the date of the department's receipt of the report of conviction, whichever occurs later.

6. Shall pay an additional assessment of one thousand dollars

7. Shall pay an additional assessment of one thousand dollars

So he'll lose his Arizona license and have an interlock device on his car.  At least the Oilers made that fine a non-issue.
