2014 Mock Draft - Ekblad To The Sabres?

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Aaron Ekblad moves into 1st overall, the Sabres are set on selecting first overall.

If things remain as they are, the Buffalo Sabres are in a bit of a pickle. The Sabres are seemingly set on drafting first overall in June and they need talent up front to start their franchise overhaul, but Aaron Ekblad is playing spoiler as the #1 player available in the draft. The Sabres have three young defensemen they think very highly of: Mark Pysyk, Brayden Mcnab, and Nikita Zadorov. In addition to the youngsters coming to the big club, they're already stocked with Christian Ehrhoff, Rasmus Ristolainen and Tyler Myers. The Sabres might need Sam Reinhart, but can they pass on the best player? If they do take Ekblad, does that signal a willingness to part with any of the aforementioned defensemen prior to, or at the draft?

The sources for the consensus list are The Scouting Report, Future Considerations, ISS, Red Line Report, Craig Button of TSN, Corey Pronman of ESPN and Bob McKenzie from TSN. Their rankings are weight by their accuracy in ranking previous drafts: Bob McKenzie's rankings carry the most weight as he was the most accurate prognosticator in the group. I may tinker with the model as the draft approaches - McKenzie is the most accurate of the group, but he typically only ranks 75-90 players. Pronman is the most accurate predictor from rounds 4-7, but that isn't reflected in the overall weighting.

The source for the draft order is the Copper & Blue Power Rankings.

  • It seems to me the Sharks and Oilers are a natural match at the trade deadline. The Sharks need another forward to put them over the top, and the Oilers have Ales Hemsky. The Sharks will have two very late 2nd round picks available to send to Craig MacTavish in exchange for Hemsky.
  • Anaheim sits in a similar position with two mid-to-late picks in the second round and a need for defensive depth. Ron Hainsey and Tom Gilbert would help Anaheim tremendously.
