Oilers Trim Roster By Ten

A day after returning seven players to their junior teams, the Oilers announced this afternoon that ten more have been assigned to the Oklahoma City Barons.

Following the team's first round of cuts yesterday morning, the Oilers have now sent another ten players back to the farm team in Oklahoma City. These cuts bring the Oilers down to 45 players at camp. The announcement was made via the Oilers Twitter account.

Like the cuts made yesterday there aren't any surprises on this list.

Martin Gernat and David Musil are hopefully going to be part of the next wave of Oilers defencemen, but as it stands now they're still way down the depth chart, and with the sheer number of defencemen at camp this year keeping them around much longer wouldn't have made much sense.Of the five forwards sent packing today there it's unlikely that any of them will ever spend any real time in the NHL.

Olivier Roy played a played 37 minutes on Saturday against the Flames allowing four goals; Tyler Bunz didn't even play in the pre season. Bunz had a very good final year in junior playing with the Medicine Hat Tigers, but since then things have not gone well for him. He struggled mightily last season posting an 0.886 save percentage in the ECHL. Those struggles continued during the Rookie Tournament, and he talked with Reid Wilkins last week about his confidence, or lack of, right now. It'd be great if one of these two panned out if for no other reason than it would provide the Oilers with a succession plan between the pipes. I can't say that I'm very optimistic about that happening though.
