Oilers Call Up Anton Lander

Christian Petersen

The Oilers finally recall a centre from Oklahoma City to replace the injured Eric Belanger. This time it's Anton Lander.

Centre Anton Lander has been called up from the AHL in time for the Oilers home-and-home with Calgary. Via the Oklahoma City Barons website:

The Edmonton Oilers, parent club of the Oklahoma City Barons, recalled centerman Anton Lander. Lander, a 6-0, 194-pounder from Sundsvall, Sweden, is is fresh off of establishing a Barons franchise record with six points (3-3-6) in the team’s 7-3 win over the Rockford IceHogs. He has appeared in 45 games with Oklahoma City this season, scoring 19 points (8-11-19).

The Oilers have had four natural centres in the lineup just 20 times this season and as dawgbone noted, the Oilers haven't dressed their four regular centres together since the 2nd week of the season.

This should allow Ryan Smyth to move back to left wing where he's been far more effective this season. It also gives the Oilers an extra effective hand on the penalty kill, the one area where Lander has flourished in the NHL. Lander is expected to centre the fourth line between Mike Brown and either Ryan Smyth or Ryan Jones.
