Kellen Jones' Junior Year Slump

Kellen Jones isn't getting the puck on net like he has in the past and the pucks aren't going in. The combo is eating into his counting numbers.

The fastest way for an Oilers' prospect to break out of a slump is to have a nice throughou thrashing in The Top 25 Under 25. Scott was the guy who helped Kellen Jones out this season. From his second article in the Top 25 series:

Kellen Jones - His scoring is down significantly from last season (0.54 points per game compared to 1.00 last season), but Jones is still the fourth best scorer on the very best team in the country. No one on the team is at a point per game level, and just one player is above 0.8, so it's not like Quinnipiac has pushed him way down the lineup. Jones's shooting percentage is just 7.7%, so he certainly isn't getting much love from the bounces, while his shot rate is a very respectable 2.8 per game. If you place a premium on playing a major role for a winner, you might bump Jones up the list. Last Ranking: #41.

Just as the polls closed on our group of writers, Jones found a pulse:

February 9, 2013 - Hamilton, N.Y. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey junior Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) scored twice while goalie Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) tied the program's Division I single-season wins record as the nationally-ranked No. 2 Bobcats defeated Colgate, 3-2, at Starr Rink.

Jones' multiple-goal game is the fourth of his career and his first since he scored twice against Brown on Feb. 24, 2012.

One reason for Jones' falloff in production is his shooting percentage, as Scott mentioned above, but his shot rates are playing a part as well:

Year GP G A P S S% S/G
2010-11 38 8 14 22 87 9.2% 2.29
2011-12 36 14 22 36 118 11.9% 3.28
2012-13 28 6 9 15 78 7.7% 2.79

Jones is on pace for 100 shots in a 36 game season, compared to his 118 last year. A 15% drop in his shot rate and losing four percentage points from his shooting percentage have put a dent into his scoring rates.
