The opposing view: Matchsticks and Gasoline
- The Edmonton Oilers lost to the San Jose Sharks last night in unspectacular fashion by a score of 3-1. The team continued to make friends of both tier one and tier two fans by scratching Mark Arcobello, a player who has twelve points in twenty games. The Oilers continued to spread the love by sending Arcobello down to Oklahoma City (?!?) in order to bring up Oscar Klefbom, who didn't play last night. Will Acton was dressed instead of Arcobello, the fans really loved that.
The Oilers are saying:
"We were afraid to make a mistake early, and I thought that carried right through the first period"
That's Oilers coach Dallas Eakins during yesterday's post game presser, offering a reason or two as to why the Oilers might have dropped the game to the Sharks
Don't be afraid of making mistakes. You're going to make mistakes. This club has won four games in their first 21, there have been plenty of mistakes already made. The chute's been pulled, guys. I thank God I'm not on this coaching staff, because I sure as hell wouldn't want the daunting task of trying to sell the idea that the next sixty games matter. Try selling that to the young guns. Try selling this to guys who are in the primes of their careeres. Best yet, try selling this sort of schlock to guys like Ryan Smyth, who almost certainly aren't around after this year. The remaining games don't matter. The damned don't cry. Plain and simple, the next sixty games are an exercise in futility. The Oilers could win 40 more games out of the remaining sixty and still miss the playoffs by five to ten points. How is this possible?
The Opponent is saying:
I told the guys to relax, to flush a little bit, to make sure that tomorrow morning we're coming back on our toes, because there's way too many mental mistakes in our game"
Go on here and write your own 'flush' joke in regards to our season, I'll wait a minute.
Alright, let's move on together.
Tonight is Ladislav Smid's first game against the Oilers. You may remember Ladislav Smid from the trade that sent him to Calgary for Roman Horak and Laurent Brossoit. If this team is going to scratch Arcobello, let me at least see Horak on the fourth line for a few games. Let me believe this team acquired something for something instead of more tiddlywinks for "the future"
Keep an eye out for Oscar Klefbom's debut tonight. He was called up yesterday, and I'd be somewhat surprised not to see him in the lineup.
The Flames are wearing their new and "improved" third jerseys tonight. You know, the ones that look like they came from Wal-Mart for $28.99? Yes, I've been reduced to these trifles.
