The Difference Between the Oilers and Good Teams...

USA TODAY Sports

The Oilers SUCK!

I am sure if you have been watching the games, or glanced at the standings you would have realized this by now. There has been a number of comments on how the Oilers have been a bit unlucky not to get a few more wins, and possibly this is the case. However, a comparison of the first place Anahiem Ducks to the 7th place Edmonton Oilers is eye opening to same the least.

The Metric

As you may have noticed I have been dabbling a bit off of centre on a few statistical analysis. This is another one of those, but the result is quite shocking to me.

This is a simple +/- statistic, in games where a player is above 50% in Corsi, Fenwick, RelCorsi or RelFenwick he gets a +, where he is below 50% he gets a -, and a straight 50% earns nil points. The idea is a player is helping a team win when he is above 50%, and not when he isn't.

This isn't fair to players with tough competition, so I stuck in the REL numbers. At the end of the day though it is an interesting reflection on consistency.

See if you can notice the difference between the Edmonton Oilers and the Anaheim Ducks charts, and what conclusions maybe made about it.

Thoughts

Perhaps you noticed what I have, that the difference in the number of players over 0 is staggering, and the height of those numbers, perhaps doesn't bely the 52.5% 5 on 5 Corsi that Anaheim does, but the consistency of it appears to be helping them win games. I haven't done Vancouver or LA so I don't know if this is contributing to them having a better record or not.

The Oilers RELCorsi is higher than their actual Corsi, the same is true of the Ducks, but the degree of separation between the number is much higher with the Oilers indicating the Oilers are playing against a lot of players better than them.

Finally the many of the Oilers close to 0 on this metric are not the regular lineup with, Grebeshkov, Fedun, Omark and Hamilton scoring relatively well for the Oilers. And Arcobello has been the best Oiler this season.
