What is Possesion?

I have been wondering lately what the Oilers definition of possesion is,how they define it. Do they define it as a way to control the ice surface to support their system? Is it a way to manage the clock? I just dont know. Personally I always assumed that a possesions value was its ability to be converted into a goal, and this means to me that when you have a possesion you make an optimal effort to turn it into at least one and if a controlled rebound can be generated possibly two shots on net ASAP.I alwasys thought a possesion that did not result in a shot on net was a failure. So if the Oilers are creating possesions and also converting them into shots then it seems to me the solution to their problems can be found in the decisions surrounding those shots. The Oilers may simply need to utilise a Tactical Shooting Program that will help them make better decisions with their shots on net.Everything else seems to be working and fresh unadultered statistics never lie. If we follow the statistical pointers we might find ourselves looking at shot managment as the challenge we need to overcome. This could be a quick fix.Everything is micro-managed in the NHL so maybe the Oilers need to change their current tactical shooting program to a different one, there must be better ones out there somewhere .
