The 2012 trade deadline marked a significant end in the Oilers Organization. With the trade of Tom Gilbert to MIN the Oilers bucked the trend of the past 2 years and traded for an actual NHL player. I am not saying that this was a good hockey trade but whether you agreed with it or not, it would appear that the rebuild may be coming to an end.
Trading Tom Gilbert may not have been the best idea Steve Tambellini ever had but it would appear that organization is sticking to their plan. Staying away from picks and prospects the organization silently announced that the rebuild was over.
We have now entered into year 3 of this rebuild, based off of what we have all been told the 2012-2013 version of the Oilers is suppose to compete for a playoff spot. If this is truly the case then we should expect the Oilers to be very busy at the draft and on July 1st. Finally, if the Oilers don't win the draft lottery this year, expect the player selected in the 1st round to start next season in juniors.
