In his 30 thoughts peice, Elliotte Friedman notes the rumours the Oilers had only wanted to do a one year contract with Ryan Smyth are false. Why would the Oilers only want to do a 1 year contract with an over 35 player who absolutely isn't going anywhere? Why would they want to settle into a Sakic/Selanne type relationship where each new 1 year deal is based on what's left in the tank? No, they want to sign Smyth to a longer deal and take the cap hit whether he plays, plays to the contract value, or not. Yep, that sounds like the Oilers.
