Of course I would like to stay, but it depends on the terms. I can't really talk about it because I haven't seen an offer yet. I like the guys here, I like the city, the fans are great and I have lots of friends here. I've always been happy here so I'd like to stay.
That's Ales Hemsky talking to Jason Gregor. The quote comes in the middle of a highly critical article from Gregor that's awfully tough to disagree with. A month away from the deadline and the Oilers, seemingly, still don't know how far apart they are on a contract.

Except according to Rishaug it’s not actually true…

Do you believe the team or the player?

That tweet is worded such that both the team and Hemsky can be telling the truth. In that the team is pretty clearly responding to Hemsky’s comments, I think it’s a pretty weaselly response. There’s a pretty significant gap between “touching base” and “making an offer”.

True, but if the touch base went something like this:
Oilers: “So, Mr. Agent, what are we talking here to get Hemsky re-signed in Edmonton? Can we get some direction to see if we are in the same ballpark?”
Agent: “We are thinking something along the lines of Gaborik. Average of $5.5M or $6M per season for 5 or 6 seasons, NMC.”
Oilers: “Thanks. Let me take that back to the war room.”
In war room: “5 or 6 seasons AND a NMC! They are fucking crazy. Well, at least we touched base.”
Then there really is no point going much further. Not saying that’s what happened, BUT if I were Hemsky’s agent the only terms I would look at are 1 year in a new place with good shooters to boost his stats and then go for the big prize, or if I was concerned about his shoulders, I would shoot for a 5 year deal and the NMC, knowing in the summer I could hit up some sucker like Sather or Tallon and see what crazy money they would be willing to throw around if they Oilers so “no”.
Of course there’s point going further. This is how negotiations work in the real world. Everyone* starts with a high-ball demand or low-ball offer. Then you start to compromise. I’d be shocked if Hemsky’s agent didn’t state precisely those kind of terms. It doesn’t mean he expects to actually get them.
- Of course, this doesn’t apply to the Lowe/Tambellini school of negotiation, who are well-known to make an overpay with their initial offer (see Smid, Ladislav).
I still like to keep him. Under the possibility to make a Stanley cup run in the next 5 years, cap hit should deeper. Lets open 5 year: $ 6 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3.5 millions each = 4.9 millions & MNC for the first 3 years. That would be my final offer!
In 2011-12 the Oil have $12.2 millions open. We should resign Symth ($6.0), Gags ($3.7), Dubnyk ($950k), Petry ($1million), Peckham (?), Barker (?) and Petrell (?) maybe not. Don’t forget the buyout of Sheldon ($1.5). And I still have space ($ 6.850 millions) for a top six defender or some more help elsewhere.

is just a number to see, what will be open for others. I have replaced Petrell, for example, with O’Marra. Barker I have extended the contract for the same salary. Peckham content also remained the same because I think he could replace for the same price. Its a thinking game!
Whats happens if the Oil trade #94 to NYR and he make the play off run to Stanley cup or close to? $ 6 millions is still a reduction on him, less is always welcome.
Trade for Luongo (contract till 2022), someone for that? $ 5.3 millions for the next 10 years?
bring Sheldon Souray back!
It’s also worded to make Hemsky look bad. Funny, that.
