NHL Suspends Carcillo For 7 Games, Should Have Been More

Chicago Blackhawks forward Dan Carcillo has been suspended for 7 games for his boarding penalty

The Shanahammer found a new nail in Daniel Carcillo this evening. Brendan Shanahan issued a seven game suspension for Carcillo's hit on Tom Gilbert during Monday's contest in Chicago. Unfortunately, Shanahan didn't give him more. Carcillo has been fined or suspended ten times in total now - the incremental punishments clearly haven't delivered the message.

Gilbert is due back to the lineup tomorrow against St. Louis, but Carcillo is out for much longer. After the hit, Gilbert bounced off of the end boards and back towards Carcillo, landing on Carcillo's knee. The knee buckled inwards and to the left and Carcillo was unable to leave the ice under his own power.

Shanahan also continues to add three-to-five games to each suspension for repeat offenders (except Raffi Torres), so for Carcillo and Sutton, the next offense will likely be at least ten games.

A despicable non-hockey play. Clearly Carcillo should be suspended for as long as Gilbert is out… oh, wait, that doesn’t work this time.

suspended as long as Gilbert can not play. That would scare!

It is quite clear for those of us that watched the video. Daniel Carcillo should not have been suspended as Tom Gilbert clearly slowed down and performed a toe pick, resulting in Mister Gilbert flying into the boards.

That’s absurd.

I think he’s taking the piss out of the “toe pick” thing that resulted in a couple of non-suspensions for hits on Wild players.

And it was when the NHL claimed the same for Zidlicky when Petrell shoved him.

Sound Familiar Walrus?

I do have to wonder why Carcillo even placed his hands on Gilbert’s back that close to the boards, given the number of fines and suspensions dished out this season, not to mention his suspension earlier this year. He is a veteran player who has the habit of placing his hand on someone’s back close to the boards.

I do not care about Carcillo’s intent. I do not know what it was, and we will never know what it was. All I know is what I see in the video. Carcillo placing his hands on the numbers of Gilbert’s as the two players were skating quickly in the direction of the boards. His hand was there for a second, before he made a pushing motion, followed quickly by Gilbert bending forward and going headfirst into the boards.

I feel that the results of ones actions should determine if that person is deserving of supplemental discipline. In this case, we saw a player with a history of pushing others into the boards drive another player head first into the boards for the umpteenth time. Given that Gilbert was unable to continue playing, a 20 game suspension would be a sufficient form of discipline. Not even as a form of discipline, but rather a reminder that you cannot touch a guy between the numbers as you are skating towards the boards. Carcillo has been playing for over 5 seasons now, this is the best time to decide what habits he’ll have in the next five.

That doesn’t stop being funny to me. Even physics thinks Carcillo is a flaming bag of dicks.

Karma got Carcillo but good here. His stupid penalty cost his team the game, plus himself a seven game suspension AND an injury.

I donb’t wish injury on anybody but I’m almost prepared to make an exception here. Fuck you, Carcillo.

Agreed. Karma is a cruel mistress and this time, she didn’t put up with any shit before taking Danny to the woodshed.

And Chicago will still play him the first game they can.

And Brian Burke will pine for the days when you could maim a guy on the ice and not take a penalty.

That was ridiculous.

Colton Orr probably spends as much time training in the offseason on his fighting as he does on actual hockey.

Back in Brian Burke’s day, guys weren’t learning punching techniques used by pro boxers and martial artists.

So yeah, you can’t send Colton Orr after a guy because no one is stupid enough to try and fight him.
