Fifth-Best Defensive Prospects Around The NHL
The NHL trade deadline is set for February 27, 2012. As the Oilers slide deeper into the draft lottery, it's clear that they'll be selling at the trade deadline. At the very least the team has one coveted asset that should fetch an excellent return. A list of the fifth-best defensive prospects from each team should give everyone plenty of time to study up on that excellent return.

2. Doubtful as to whether this trade will happen or is worthwhile.
I believe the management team thinks this is an excellent return. Nothing cynical about that. I’m just using past performance to figure this stuff out.

You really think Tambicakes would aim that high? He shipped out Dustin Penner for arguably the Kings’ ninth best defensive prospect. Perhaps a list of the fifth-best defensive prospects on each NHL team’s ECHL squad would be more fitting for his M.O.
Regarding the Red Wings
I think Ryan Sproul is currently injured (broken jaw, if I recall correctly) so you might want to shift up to their 4th best defensive prospect. I think that might be Xavier Ouellet (same draft year, one pick sooner). And he’s Canadian, too!

Sounds french though. Are there any western Canadians out there?

Well, going down a spot there is Max Nicastro, but he’s from the United States and currently at Boston University, so he’s one of those uppity East Coast college guys. On the other hand, my parents fostered a Rottweiler named Max for a while and he was a great dog, so there is that in his favor.
Also in the system is Adam Almqvist who is currently in Sweden, so he might be a soft Euro but the Red Wings are known for picking Swedes and the management can go the “same country and system as Nick Lidstrom” so they might find that appealing.
Just under no circumstances accept Doug Janik (fan nickname: “Jug Danik”) or Jonathan Ericsson (fan nickname: “Riggy Shitbox”) – they will hurt your salary cap and team performance. The only thing Ericsson will help with is stupid holding penalties and looking confused as a defenseman. On the other hand the girls think he’s cute, and he is very tall.
Honestly, you might do best with the guy who has a great name for a big lug of a dog. Sorry.

Edmonton fans are getting more provincial, that’s why I ask.

I understand. A lot more Canadians with more Western-Canadian-sounding names, like Landon Ferarro, with the forwards among the prospects at the moment.

Not that I know anything about prospects beyond “good lord they all look like 12 year olds!” so I’m just going off this spreadsheet that one of the blogs put together: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhRmiZsKUESLdHdXTFVZZ3ZBQTBCY3N1QmJjLUl1SUE#gid=0

If he is injured that just means he will fit in quite well with the rest of the group we already have

Rangers 5th best guy wouldn’t be Ceresnak. You’ve got Erixon, McIlrath, Valentenko, Parlett, Pashnin, plus Bickel who’s with the big club right now, that should all be ahead of him.

Derek, don’t forget you have to refine your list by first rounders only. This gives the SportsNet crew the opportunity to talk about how many first rounders are in the lineup in numbers they can’t count to.
McIlrath it is then. I heard that the Oilers tried to trade up for him at the draft but it just didn’t work out. Sather is a meanie and the Oilers just don’t have any luck with that sort of thing.
In a related note, I am really surprised that Penner hasn’t played well enough to make that trade look really awful. His shooting percentage since being in LA is really poor, but so is his shooting rate. It looks like his TOI is down a bit, but probably not enough to explain the dip in shooting rate. And he killed another coach. ;)

Just wait until I get that Columbus GM job. I’m signing Penner.

Duh.
Seriously though, he could be a great buy in the offseason assuming this is just an off year.
His shot distance at 5v5 is quite a bit worse than in EDM. He has a lot of o-zone starts too.
The good news is his linemates can’t shoot either when he’s out there, so that’s a start. His Corsi is also good, but that’s tempered at least a little by the zone starts.
If we see DET sign him, then I guess we know the deal.

Look at LA’s shot distance as a whole.

Hard to say. I’m not really sure of Murray’s history – is he from the Babcock/McLellan school of throw it at the net? Must be judging by all the shots. Basically Richards is the only guy in the red.
Funny it looks like Stoll is having a pretty good year. Worse zone starts than Richards but finishing shifts in the other end and a strongly positive Corsi.

I know that is heresy on this site, but perhaps, just perhaps, Penner is one of those players that looks good on a shit team because he gets all sorts of ice time and plays designed around him, but when he plays on a real hockey team and has to earn the opportunity find he just isn’t up to the task.
Yeah, I doubt it. I never liked the guy but I find it hard to believe he’s not a good hockey player. It’s hard to argue that he has acquitted himself well in his time in LA to date though.
