Martin Marincin Traded To Regina

via Reginapats.com:

The Regina Pats are proud to announce the acquisition of defenceman Martin Marincin as well as a 4th and 7th round pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft and a 4th in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft from the Prince George Cougars in exchange for defenceman Ricard Blidstrand, a 1st and 2nd round pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft and a 5th in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.

Today marks the WHL's trade deadline and like the NHL, the day is marked by a frenzy of moves by middle-tier teams hoping to make a post-season run. The Pats, currently 5th in the Eastern Conference gave up a significant chunk of their next Bantam draft to acquire Marincin from the the also-ran Cougars.

The trade brings together the players who might make up the Oklahoma City Barons' bottom pairing for the 2012-13 season, Brandon Davidson and Martin Marincin. Davidson, an overager, has been a stalwart on the Pats' blueline for three years and is their top defenseman in all situations.

Marincin came in at #11 in our summer Top 25 Under 25. Davidson checked in at #18.

Nice.

Never been much of a Cougars-fan for w/e reason. Glad to see Marincin join up with Davidson and the Pats.

Off topic: Derek, could you sort a (Google) 1 button to C&B next to the “tweet” and “like” buttons perhaps? 1/button/" target="_blank">http://www.google.com/+1/button/

d'oh

I seriously need to learn to click on the “preview” button before I do “post”. Or you could add an edit-button that’s available to use for say 1 minute after you’ve posted.

Link to the Google+ +1 Button thingy that hopefully works better than my last try.

I really don’t follow these leagues but despite how good Marincin may be that seems like a hell of an overpay to likely lose him at the end of the season.

The prices are going up for rentals in the WHL. This is only steep because Marincin is an import, and has a limited market as a result (teams can only have 2 imports on their roster). Really, a first and a second plus getting three picks back is pretty good for a player of his caliber. Blidstrand had to be given up as a result. Not terrible, since Marincin takes his spot in the lineup as well as the import slot, though.

It will be interesting to see if they play on the same pairing, and if they do, whether or not they develop some chemistry together.
