That sort of consistency in two separate interviews sends a clear message: Devan Dubnyk won’t have to wait for Khabibulin to falter this season. While Tambellini makes no assurances about how the games are to be split between the two goaltenders, it seems probable that Tambellini has come to the same conclusion the vast majority of the fans have: Devan Dubnyk should be the Oilers’ starting goaltender out of the gate.

That's Jonathan Willis at the Cult of Hockey discussing Steve Tambellini's consistent message about the Oilers' goaltenders.

My goodness, continental plates move more decisively than Tambellini. Even if by some miracle Khabibulin has rebounded (no pun intended) into MVP form (ha!), you’d still be better off to play Dubnyk for 60 games to see if he is a veritable #1 for the years ahead when we actually have a team skilled and experienced enough to challenge.

I think they should make NK the starter and then he can work in kinks and lead us to the stanley cup next season. I mean how awesome would it be if he does that in his last nhl season…Right? Right? RIght?

Right. Of course if he wins the Cup, we could always sign him to a Bryzgalov-style extension.

If there is anything Tambellini is good at, it’s hedging his bets.

It’s nice to hear and all, but aren’t things like naming your starting goaltender, and game splits the call of the head coach and not the GM? Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Tambellini probably has a better idea of what Renney’s thoughts are than I do, but I always find it a little strange to hear GMs answering questions about line combinations and goalie splits.

and hence his neutral stand on the issue. At least he is answering the questions being asked. A big step IMO

Fair enough, but previously Tambellini was championing Khabi as team MVP when any sane person could see he was finished as an NHL goaltender.
