The Oilers announced this morning that Sam Gagner has suffered a high ankle sprain after crashing awkwardly into the end boards on Saturday night. If you haven't seen the video you can find it here, skip ahead to the 1:10 mark.

For now Gagner is listed as week to week. At this point it's probably too early to say for sure that he won't be ready for the season opener but if he isn't this opens the door for both Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Anton Lander to make the team out of camp.

Dan Tencer is tweeting that it’s not “high” but more “mid”. Considering the Oilers history with injury diagnosis I’m betting high.

I’ve never heard of a mid-ankle sprain (I’m pretty sure it’s just an ankle sprain).

A high ankle sprain is damage to the ligaments that connect your tibia and fibula (your shin bones).

The problem with a high ankle sprain is that there’s nothing you can really do to brace it to help with rehab, so it’s quite common to have setbacks during rehab because you injure it more. It’s also common to re-injure it simply by walking around, so you are often stuck in a full boot, which of course makes it harder to come back from.

In theory, there is little difference between practice and theory, but in practice there is!

I’ve had two high ankle sprains. Once playing high school basketball, and another (and less glamorous moment) on a jet ski. The first time it was 6 weeks before I was able to run, or even walk briskly. The second time required physical therapy, but once again 6 weeks. The level of severity is the key. But, in my situation, I was told a full breakage would have been better because of the long-term likelihood of re-injuring the ankle.

Can you elaborate on the jet ski incident please. Sounds like it might be interesting.

It begins & ends with me water-skiing behind a jet ski. It was awesome until it wasn’t.
