Weekend Update: Oilers Dominate At Young Stars Tournament

While Dillon Simpson (right) is already back at school, Colten Teubert (left) hopes to be good to go for training camp

The Edmonton Oilers did end up losing their first game at the Young Stars Tournament in Penticton in years, but overall Oilers' fans should be happy and proud of the young prospects who went 2-1, losing only one game to the Calgary Flames.

Star-divide

On Sunday night, the baby Oilers beat the baby Vancouver Canucks convincingly, 7-2 and after a day off followed up with a 2-0 shut-out of the Winnipeg Jets prospects. Tuesday night's astounding play by netminder Tyler Bunz. If you hadn't heard of Bunz, you know him now. Bunz will play this season in the WHL, so you will have a few chances to see the Oilers' prospect when the Medicine Hat Tigers play the Edmonton Oil Kings. The other Medicine Hat Tyler however, will not be with the team. Dan Tencer tweeted earlier this week that Tambellini is going to have Tyler Pitlick play in Oklahoma City this year.

There was some sad news out of the rookie tournament with the injury to Colten Teubert. Teubert was sent home early after getting knocked out in a fight. His nose was broken and there were some concussion concerns. Teubert is expected to be at training camp tomorrow and any news on his condition will of course be shared.

The Edmonton Oilers have renewed their partnership with the ECHL Stockton Thunder. As part of the agreement, the Oilers will have to send 3 contracted forwards to the Thunder.

Friday was the first day of training camp, and the players least favourite activity, the V02 bike along with all of the other medical testing. There aren't many surprises on the training camp list, but this camp seems shorter than usual and is not open to the public until Sunday and the Joey Moss Cup.

The Edmonton Oilers have brought their 'A' game, at least in my eyes, this summer in terms of sharing videos and updates on prospects and players. I look forward to more content like this, especially when it centres on players like Anton Lander.

Ex -Oiler Steve Staios will not be attending the Edmonton Oilers' training camp and will instead be attending camp with the New York Islanders. Sticking with blue and orange may have been a part of the appeal. (Kidding!)

Nikolai Khabibulin is in Edmonton and is speaking to the media. After 30 days served, Khabibulin is happy to put this experience behind him and more forward. Now that he has served his time, Khabibulin is able to comment on what happened and now has the opportunity to say it was a mistake and that he is sorry.

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sydney Crosby has been cleared to practice with his team. I didn't want to comment on it last week while the hurt was so near, but I don't think that Crosby did anything wrong in keeping his scheduled press conference. This event was centred around the expert presentations of doctors. These doctors had moved their schedule for this event. If it was your brain surgery that would have to be moved because your surgeon had to move a press conference because it might not look good, I think you might have a passionate response.

Oklahoma City Barons' assistant coach Rocky Thompson was with the OIlers' prospects and Todd Nelson in Penticton for the Young Stars Tournament and has written about his experiences. I'm sure that the Oklahoma coaching staff have headed home already making plans for their season after seeing several players that will be in Oklahoma this season.

He can keep growing, hopefully at a steady pace that he is able to work with in terms of his skating.
