All Of These Defensemen Aren't Going To Turn Out...

"A number of years ago we were talking about Chorney, Petry and Wild in an excited manner - top 4 material all - and I suggested that maybe one of them would become a real NHL player. You can expect the same thing with our new young dmen - 75% will turn out to be magic beans in the fullness of time. 'Curb your enthusiasm' is a phrase to remember with dmen"

--Always-thoughtful commenter AsiaOil at Lowetide's place.

Star-divide

If 75% of the Oilers' defensive prospect pool will turn into frijoles, you've got to pick 3 of these 12 as the guys to make it.

Kyle Bigos
Jeremie Blain
Brandon Davidson
Taylor Fedun
Martin Gernat
Oscar Klefbom
Martin Marincin
Johan Motin
David Musil
Alex Plante
Dillon Simpson
Colten Teubert

However, given five of these kids were drafted in the first or second round, an optimistic view says 33% will turn out, so let's say that 4 of the 12 on the list will end up in the NHL and play significant minutes.

Who is on your list?

Mine too.

Isn’t it heresy to say that a every Oilers prospect won’t be an NHL star?

Dillon Simpson. #1 with a bullet.

Unless his skating improves dramatically, I think you mean ‘#1 to get a bullet’

Great post/question!
My picks: Marincin, Klefbom and Teubert.

Last paragraph allows you a 4th pick

Klefbom, Marincin, Musil, and…..Davidson

by DarrenV on Jul 26, 2011 10:22 AM MDT reply actions

Going to go against the grain with my 4th pick...

Klefbom
Musil
Marincin

But with my fourth pick I am taking Blaine. And I don’t know why. Ever since he was drafted, I have felt drawn to him. Plus he seems to be the major defensive contributor on his current juniour team.

I’d say at least 1 or 2 of the first rounders amounts to nothing, and at least one of the lower rounders turns out to be a solid NHLer. That’s just the way things seem to go.

I’ll say Kelfborn, Musil, Davidson, and Marincin

Klefbom, Musil, Marincin and Gernat?

I dream of full grown Marincin and Gernat holding hands on the blueline for their entire careers… “You shall not pass!” in Slovakian of course.

Plante, Simpson, Marincin, Blain

In theory, there is little difference between practice and theory, but in practice there is!

by dawgbone98 on Jul 26, 2011 11:01 AM MDT reply actions

Klefbom, Marincin, Musil and Teubert seem the most likely to succeed.

However, I am rooting for both Fedun and Gernat as underdogs

by riraito on Jul 26, 2011 11:02 AM MDT reply actions

Also

If plante doesn’t make it, then I’ll be really disappointed with how the 1st round of the 2007 draft turned out.

by riraito on Jul 26, 2011 11:05 AM MDT up reply actions

I’m a fan of Alex Plante as well, but he seems to be stagnating at this point. His movements are just too slow and rigid to be effective at the NHL level. At 6’ 4" 225 lbs (not heavy for his body structure) he may need to drop to about 215lbs to achieve that extra agility, whatever he’s doing now is not working.

I also think Blaine could be a very good player. Seems like he has what Petry and Gilbert do but he’s got more edge according to the piece by Reynolds. His skill set to me resembles Letang. I like players that skate well and have a full NHL tool bag to develop, reminds me of days long gone by….

I’ll take Marincin, Klefbom, Simpson and Fedun.

by melancholyculkin on Jul 26, 2011 11:16 AM MDT reply actions

My Horses...

Kelfbom, Marincin, Musil, Tuebert – With Blaine having a real shot, and Dillon Simpson in the outside lane.

I also think theres a good chance Davidson, Gernat, and Fedun get cups of coffee.

by AdR23 on Jul 26, 2011 11:38 AM MDT reply actions

To all of the above

It’s actually Blain, not “Blaine”.

I like him, too.

by hellofasandwich on Jul 26, 2011 1:17 PM MDT reply actions

Klefbom is the only guy with legitimate first-pairing potential and he’s still an outside chance.

Simpson and Bigos strike me was guys who are going to play somewhere. Bigos, in particularly, is the sort of big-strong-but-not-stupid defenseman who has a Cory Cross-style career and plays for six hundred NHL teams bouncing between the big and little leagues a couple times a season. I’d add Motin to that list but I think he’d go back to Europe rather than take that sort of life.

I like Alex Plante. Maybe I’m the last man who does. Jeremie Blain might be Marc-Andre Bergeron. I still haven’t figured Musil out.

The rest, I look at and I just see one enormous turd sliding down my screen.

So, if you’re asking me to pick four, I take Klefbom, Plante, Simpson and… Blain, I think. But with the caveat that I’d be surprised if two of those four become core players.

Marincin definitely has first pairing potential IMO.

Nope. See my above comment. Still debating whether to get Plante or Ian Schultz on the back of my Hitmen jersey.

I’m going to pick three players. I’ll take Marincin, Klefbom and Davidson. Tuebert would be my fourth choice, but I’m not sold on him yet (we’ll see how this season goes), and Blain and Musil are on the radar.

Marincin and Klefbom.
After that, I like things about all of Blain, Davidson, Musil, Simpson and Teubert; I’d probably pick Musil and Blain as the other two.

A posse ad esse.
