Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

No. Less and less. The one thing I can say, and I don’t know if you watch 'The Simpsons,' the episode with Darryl Strawberry, when they start (chanting) 'Darryl, Darryl,' and there’s a tear in his eye. I used to laugh at that, and now I don’t. [laughs]

That's Dustin Penner responding to Rich Hammond who asked him whether or not hearing criticism from others bothers him. I found the entire interview quite interesting.

Quotes like that make me realize just how much I miss Penner.

no doubt, why can’t more hockey players have a personality?

Because if a player show any personality or flair that the media doesn’t like they beat it him up for it and he turns into Ryan “Never Met A Cliche I Didn’t Like” Smyth rather than suffer that fate again.

Then you have the odd cats like Penner who barely give a shit and make for great interviews and quotes. Who knew intermission interviews could be interesting?

are you taking a shot at Smythie?

Great player, but he’s dry as sand in an interview.

In theory, there is little difference between practice and theory, but in practice there is!

He’s just reeeeeeaaaaaally dumb.

I spent about five minutes the other day riffing on Smytty’s cliche-laden interview style. My girlfriend was in stitches.

Ryan Smyth is every hockey-player stereotype personified. Works hard, plays hurt, nicest guy in the world off the ice, and spouts so many cliches and “you knows” in interviews you’d think he was taking the piss.

Robertson's Rants - Exceedingly occasional, lengthy ramblings on hockey topics, hosted at Puck Podcast. And no, my name's not Doug.
