Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Colin Fraser, player Kings acquired in Ryan Smyth deal, has unhealed fracture/cyst and will need surgery 4 months projection. Kings angry... To repeat/clarify previous; Smyth trade will NOT be voided. They will work out additional/alternative compensation to Kings.

That's Helene Elliott letting us know that there's been yet another complication in the Ryan Smyth trade. You may recall that Gilbert Brule was originally the man sent West until it was revealed that he was injured, and the Kings wouldn't be able to buy him out. Now, it's Colin Fraser's turn to play the role of damaged goods. As the usually organization-friendly Jim Matheson said earlier today, "This doesn’t look good on the Oilers." No kidding.

Well, if the Oilers are repairing one aspect of thier reputation with Smid, nice to see them balance it out by wrecking another part…

its possible that Oilers did not know about it. When Kings talked to Fraser/his agent for a buyout, they might have come clean about a possible injury negating any possibility of a buyout

By the sounds of things, the Kings didn’t want to buy him out (although that might be them blowing smoke).

thts what boggles me. They are mad that they cant buy him off, when they stated that they will not be buying him out!

Well, I think they’re more angry that he can’t play.

in the tsn article, they have reference buyout. I am not the one making it up.

Forward Colin Fraser was included instead, but sources tell TSN that there are now concerns being raised about his health and the ability of a buyout to be executed on his contract.

Kings have no reason to buy him out. He’s an experienced player just $300K over the minimum. It would cost them more to buy him out at 2/3 and then pay somebody else the minimum to replace him.

[Voice-in-the-wilderness mode] Besides, in the right situation he’s not a bad guy to have around. Very low-event, which is only half bad.

They save $275,000 and the same on the cap. Chicago showed the Kings that Fraser wasn’t a top 12 forward on a contender, so why would the Kings keep a one-way contract on the cap when it couldn’t help them win a cup?

Brule was cleared and declared healthy by the end of the season with the Oilers, and as far as I know the Kings’ medical staff didn’t look at him. To me, it sounded as though the Kings just decided that they didn’t want Brule and were able to say whatever they wanted before the papers were signed.

To me, it sounded as though the Kings just decided that they didn’t want Brule and were able to say whatever they wanted before the papers were signed.

This is not even remotely true. From LA Kings Insider:

"Well, it’s fair to say that we had four league lawyers in there who worked their butts off. I give the league a lot of credit. Those four people stayed there after a long day. It’s not butt-kissing. When they do a good job, I’ll tell them. Four of the league’s lawyers stayed there, well into the post-draft period, trying to find a solution. It was very clear, in discussing with them, that this player would not qualify as being healthy. We tried to find a solution. It was David Zimmerman, Julie Grand, Jessica Berman and Daniel Ages. We said, `We want this deal to happen.’ They said, `Dean, there’s no way.’ Those people tried everything. They looked at the documentation and this was something that could not happen. There was no solution, given the documents and everything that were in front of them. So I’ll leave it at that."

That’s NHL Associate Counsels Daniel Ages, David Zimmerman, Julie Grand, and Jessica Berman. The league said Brule would not qualify as healthy and the league said the Kings would not be able to buy him out.

If Dreger is correct, and Brule is suffering from depression, there’s a good chance that he would be able to file a grievance against any buyout with that diagnosis and be in the right.

That’s the first I head about anything along those lines, and I would venture to say that that is true for a lot of hockey fans out there.

If the Oilers sent the Kings a memo explaining Fraser’s injury (which would be a hell of a thing for them to lie about if they didn’t), this is all on Los Angeles. Dean Lombardi is a fuckwit anyway. I’ve no sympathy for them.

When the Oilers’ management for once actually manage to do something semi-competently I think Benjamin gets to vent a bit.

I expect that this is just Lombardi pulling a Burke and throwing a tantrum about losing this trade so badly.
