Have now heard from two sources that Edmonton may trade down from No. 1 pick. Florida a likely partner.

That's Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News detailing yet another source who thinks Steve Tambellini and Dale Tallon might dance.

Well, there does seem to be some momentum with this one.
Any educated guesses as to what we get in return?

That’s brilliant!

In theory, there is little difference between practice and theory, but in practice there is!

Florida have two highly rated WHL defencement – Colby Robak and Alexander Petrovic in the system. I suspect those are the guys Edmonton is asking for if they’re going to move down.

by Marc_S on Jun 21, 2011 1:49 PM MDT reply actions

Those guys and the number three pick?

Sounds like good deal if the Oilers wants Larsson.

by Alexander Calloway on Jun 21, 2011 2:08 PM MDT up reply actions

I would think the move down is to grab Larsson which reduces the need for the D.

Florida has one first, two second rounders and four thirds in this draft. So I suspect picks would be the primary asset. Would be a nice move if they did indeed target Larsson as their pick and are simultaneously giving themselves more flexibility at the draft table to target their players of interest.

Are the Panthers SURE that Colorado won’t take Larsson #2?

If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!

Should say “will take Larsson #2”.

I’m thinking that if the Oilers are moving down, it’s them targeting Larsson, and if they do move down, I’d have to think that they’re pretty confident that the Avalanche won’t take him. I would assume that Florida is moving up to get Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (or possibly Gabriel Landeskog) since it seems very unlikely that he’ll last until the third pick.

The Oil could always draft Couturier with the 3rd overall pick if Larsson is taken.

those 2 guys are identical to Plante and Teubert. what is the point of that?

by Oi on Jun 21, 2011 3:28 PM MDT up reply actions

20 year old WHL seasons:

                            GP G A Pts PIM +/-
Robak 71 16 50 66 9 56
Petrovic 69 7 50 57 140 27
Plante 68 8 37 45 157 31
Teubert 60 10 30 40 115 -2

It looks like they have a bit more offence to me. I don’t think you get a blue chip prospect for moving down two spots, but you might get a solid D prospect

by Marc_S on Jun 21, 2011 4:43 PM MDT up reply actions

The rhetorical question I have is this: Trade down for what?

Answering myself on the probables:

- an extra 2nd rounder is probably available (#33 or #47)
-
Souray could be involved (as Florida may want that 900k of free Cap)
— a D prospect like Robak may be available

There isn’t much deadweight on the Florida roster and they need all the salary they can get regardless so I am thinking the above is as far as it gets. Horcoff isn’t involved because his Cap plusses don’t hit until 2013-14.

If Souray really is on the table how much more can we expect from this trade?

A passable deal for the Oilers could easily be:

1st and Souray
FOR
3rd and 47th

Really good deal could be:

1st, 74th and Souray
FOR
3rd, 33rd and Robak

Of course there is always the possibility that Tambellini wants to WIN next year – in which case the deal could include the names Gagner and Weiss… and if I wanted to build a winner sooner rather than later that is a worthwhile price to pay imo.

If the Smyth trade demand is actually on the table then I’d do Gagner+ for Weiss in addition to a Smyth acquisition tomorrow.

Hall – Weiss – Hemsky
Smyth – Horcoff – Eberle

That’s a playoff top six for sure. One hundred percent.

You’re thinking something like 1 and Gagner for 3 and Weiss? That’s crazy, I think. Though Tallon gave up Frolik for Jack friggin’ Skille, so I have no idea what that guy does.

No, there would be more to it but the core of any deal comes down to what the other thinks is most valuable.

Coburn got traded for Zhitnick once upon a time (gotta make the play-offs, gotta make the play-offs, gotta make the play-offs, gonna get raped on a deal, gotta make the play-offs, gotta make the play-offs).

So maybe Tallon’s biggest issues are:
a) resetting his window and
b) making the Cap Floor (though I would have to review penalties to get a better idea on that score)

If that is the case then:

1st, 62nd, 2012 2nd, Gagner & Souray
FOR
3rd, 87 and Weiss

may work? Given Tallon’s love for toughness probably not but the skeleton is there. Brule could even make an appearance (though I highly doubt it).

by Jaysen Knight on Jun 21, 2011 9:19 PM MDT up reply actions

1, Gagner, Gilbert for 3, Weiss. I know you love Gilbert but come on!

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Gudbrandson

so a 3rd overall, a former 3rd overall for 1stoverall? too steep

Success is not a goal..its a byproduct
