Although Smyth denied it in an interview, the LA Times suggests the trade rumours are genuine:
"It's believed the Kings would take a mid-range draft pick for Smyth, who played his 1,000th career game early last season."
So: would you do that - take on Smyth and his $6.25m cap hit ($4.5m real dollars) for a fourth round pick?

In a heartbeat.

Whenever you have a lot of cap space and you can get a quality player who wants to be there for that low of a price you do it without question.

In theory, there is little difference between practice and theory, but in practice there is!

sign it. Heck, I’d give up a second rounder for the guy, and the opportunity to resign him for another few years at a more reasonable 2 to 3 million to end out his career.

Yep….. He fills a few needs. He should make our powerplay better. Reliable Penalty Killer. Actual NHL Player. Can move up and down the lineup.

To put this in perspective. How upset would everyone be if Vancouver picked him up for a 4th round pick?

I’ve been saying we need a veteran leader to help Horcoff. I’ve been suggesting that the best UFA to fill the role is Jamie Langenbrunner. I’ll take Smyty instead any day of the week, guy is a beauty, and who cares about the cap hit next year, he doesn’t cost much when it matters.

by Ca$h-Money! on Jun 21, 2011 9:20 AM MDT reply actions

Our third is like a late second, so that’s about as high as I would go with draft picks – but I’d consider something like Brule and a fourth (if I were in a position to make such decisions).

by jjev on Jun 21, 2011 9:27 AM MDT reply actions

agreed. I’m not saying I want to give up a second, but with 2 picks in the first this year, and a well stocked cupboard, the rest of the draft is all gravy at this point. IF that’s what it takes, fine.

by Ca$h-Money! on Jun 21, 2011 9:34 AM MDT up reply actions

Not for 4.5 million

He’s not worth that much to a rebuilding team that won’t make the playoffs next year. I’d wait till his contract expires at the end of next year and then sign him for 2 mil.

I completely agree we need a guy like that in our lineup and he’d help the younger guys but almost 5 million and 35 years old?

This is the same site that consistently advocates trading Hemsky (who makes less than 4.5 and is 8 years younger) for prospects, right? While I don’t agree with that, I can completely see the logic. The sign Smyth for more money than Hemsky and trade away draft pics is a bit puzzling though.

Only way it’d work is if it was some kind of trade that got rid of another ridiculuos salary … Khabibulin for Smyth – absolutely. Souray for Smyth – absolutely. Horcoff for Smyth – probably. Obviously, I don’t see any of those deals happening.

by Czechboy on Jun 21, 2011 10:10 AM MDT reply actions

This team is below the cap floor right now.

There is no draw back.

And who here is advocating trading Hemsky?

Absolutely not! I very much want them to get Hemsky signed to a contract extension.

As for Smyth, the asking price must be higher than a fourth rounder because if that’s the price, I’m shocked that this trade hasn’t already happened. In that the Oilers are almost certainly not spending to the cap, and probably can’t bring an equivalent or better player to Edmonton in free agency on a one year deal, it makes loads of sense just based on skill-set and the stated desire of the players to bring in some players to make the team better. The fact that the player in question is Ryan Smyth makes it that much more attractive. If you’re giving up really quality assets I can see the hesitation, but if it’s a mid-round pick, just get it done!

Maybe they’re trying to get LA to take a contract off their hands.

I guess there aren’t any other dance partners for the Kings, so I can’t be too upset about that!

My ‘06 Cup Run jersey is already earmarked for San Fernando, Patron Saint of Lost Hockey Causes (I just had my lab’s postdoc get me a Finals patch off eBay), but my MacFarlane jersey is open for bids. If Smytty came back…I’d have to think awfully hard about that.

Character and class, plays his game in the scoring zone. He would be a fantastic mentor. He gets the job done and has no quit in him.

If Katz wants to spend extra, then yes. Makes me think if he comes Hemsky is very likely going.

by FastOil on Jun 21, 2011 11:18 AM MDT reply actions

Why? Not like we’re in any cap trouble. If anything, bringing back his old linemate Smytty might encourage him to stay.

It makes me think Smyth and Klowe planned this all along, Smyth gets traded for picks, avoids the worst 3-4 years of the rebuild whilst trying to win a cup, earns 20M, then comes back to etown for nothing.

Maybe Hemsky makes the same play, gets traded to columbus for the 8th, attempts a run at the cup, then resigns in Columbus or elsewhere, 1-2 year deal for tons of $$$, then resigns in etown for cheap once he’s got tons of bank!

The whole prospect of trading Hemsky for Smyth is just ridiculous. If that’s the price then just wait out the contract. Not to say that I don’t want Smytty back, but come on!
