Weekend Update: Oilers Host Garage Sale of Sorts

The Edmonton Oilersannual locker room sale has been announced. Sunday May 15th season ticket holders will get first crack at a variety of game worn items, and general Oilers merchandise. Soon after, the sale will open up to the public. If you live in or around Edmonton and like these types of items, this is the sale you have been waiting all year for.

There is still no deal between the Oilers and winger Ryan Jones. Of all of the RFAs this off season, a Jones signing with the Oilers or any other team will likely garner the most attention from Oilers' fans. Through Jones' community spirit and involvement, his prank videos, twitter account and entertaining interviews, Jones has replaced some of what has been missing on this team since the departure of Matt Greene, Steve Staios and Ryan Smyth.

Star-divide

Before the rookie seasons for Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall and Magnus Paajarvi began, they all played in the Rookie Tournament in Penticton B.C. During that time the Oilers rookies played with other prospects such as Tyler Pitlick, Tyler Bunz, Chris VandeVelde and Jeff Petry to name a few. This goodie was up on the Oilers website and I am always looking with something fun or positive to share with you.

At the world championships, Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi have been playing their game and making splashes. Canada took on France on Sunday May 1st. Canada won 9-1. Monday, Sweden beat Austria 3-0. Tuesday Canada beat Switzerland 4-3 in OT. Wednesday Sweden won 6-2 over the USA. Friday saw both Canada and Sweden in action, and both teams victorious. Canada beat the USA 4-3 in a shootout and with none other than Jordan Eberle scoring the game winner. The same day, Sweden beat France 4-3. At this point in the tournament, Eberle has 4 goals and is +4 and Paajarvi has 1 goal and 3 assists and is also +4.

Former Oilers' coach Craig MacTavish is said to be in discussion with the Minnesota Wild for their position of head coach. Said MacT "I took a break and I'm recharged and want to get back into it. I'm looking forward to the opportunity, but the opportunities are few and far between in this business. If it turns into an opportunity for me, we'll see."

Ex-Oiler Robert Nilsson has been playing with Salavat Yulayev, Ufa's entry in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. His team has just won the Gagarin Cup and is looking forward to next year with his team. If he recieves the right offer, Nilsson is open to returning to the NHL. He did however remark "After my experience in the show with zero playoff games, it's pretty fun to play in the playoffs."

I know the math hates Jones, but I really hope we re-sign him (though not at an overpay). Like you say Lisa, he’s the character guy that is fantastic for a team, that we haven’t seen since Greene and Reasoner left (still remember the banter between those two at the Skills Competition where Marty scored a hatty). Whilst on the topic of Reasoner, I’d love to see the Oilers bring him back. He actually seems to be getting better with age. Plus he can take faceoffs and be responsible defensively. Perfect stop-gap until the likes of Lander and Pitlick are ready.

With regards to Brownlee’s interviews with Stu MacGregor, they are well worth reading. Short answers regarding each prospect, but very insightful.

I believe that the Oilers like Jones; his game, his character, the whole package. I also believe that they are going to continue to sign him. I imagine Jones is looking for multiple years and the Oilers are a bit more hesitant to sign long contracts after a single year with the team. I’m hoping that they have learned from the past.

As for Reasoner? Sign me up on that bandwagon too. I didn’t like it any of the times the Oilers traded or let him go. Reasoner could have won faceoffs and worked with the young centremen. He bled copper and blue and was clearly loved by his teammates.

Which history are you hoping the team learns from, Lisa? The Nilsson and Brule history wherein they overpay a guy with a mid-term deal based on a career year, or the Glencross and Hejda history wherein they let useful players walk away for nothing?

I’m a dreamer and I hope they learned from both types of signings. I still also think they overpaid Gilbert after a phenomenal year.

I’d like to see Jones get $1.25-1.5 at this moment, today. I may waffle from here on in.

i think he got ‘overpaid’ before a phenomenal year :P

Success is not a goal..its a byproduct

No argument from me on Gilbert. His shooting percentage in the 2007-08 season was bonkers. If they signed him to that deal expecting a double-digit goalscorer for six more years, they were bound to be disappointed. Even still, Gilbert’s contract is a pretty good one. If we look at the defenders in his price range for 2010-11 ($3.8M to $4.2M), I don’t think he looks out of place at all. In fact, I prefer him to most of the guys in that range.

I’d be curious as to what would constitute an overpay for Ryan Jones for you. The bottom line for me is that I can’t see him being more than a fourth line player on a good team right now, and I have some doubt about how good he’d be at that. If it’s much more than the minimum, that would be an overpay in my books, and he’s likely looking for a lot more than that.

If you view him as a 4th liner, then you shouldn’t pay more than a million (at least when you are contending). An effective budget allocation won’t allow it. Right now, though, and for 2 more years, it doesn’t really matter so long as he is off the books when the big three’s ELCs expire.
