Player aquisition

If the oilers are to climb out of the basement they cannot rely solely on the draft to get it done. In the post Oilers missing the boat by not using Amateur Free Agents route to acquire talent posted by me on Feb 6, I stated that the oilers must do a better job of recruiting Amateur free agents.

They have done well so far this spring signing.

These young players all under 25 provide depth at our AHL level and lessen the need for high priced mercenary talent like Giroux, Moran, ect, we may still need a couple but with Bryan Helmer signed to one more year we maybe need only one more, to provide leadership to our young prospects that will surely be playing in OKC next year.

But  are we done, Lowetide on Oiler nation reported that the Oilers may be interested in  Ville Lajunen a 23 year old 6 foot, 180 lb Finnish defender, and Victor Fasth a 29 year old goaltender playing for Sweden in the world championships. This would be very welcome as many more knowledgeable hockey people have identified organizational weakness on defense and in goal.

I have also been impressed by the signing of our drafted prospects

I am a little worried by the lack of signing Martindale, or Davidson as I believe if we don`t sign the we lose their rights but I could use some clarification on this.

In closing I am looking forward to the draft, not getting sucked into the debate I trust in STU, I am impressed by the oilers progress so far. OKC   experiment went well and by all reports the Player development system is working well with Moores and Sillinger at the helm.

A couple more European free agents and a strategic trade or pro free agent and we could start to see a playoff hope some day soon.

If they do sign Fasth, that would be really nice. I am not sure how I feel about the finnish guy. Seems a lot like Kevin Montgomery to me

Lajunen sounds like someone who they would look at the help the PP.

Idk, his nhl equivalencies havent been that good. except for the season before. If we do sign him lets see how he works out, Personally I would rather they look for more d-men like Hejda than PP ace,

idk either, but his scouting report is as an offensive defenceman. Risto Siltanen type, I think I read. The Oilers PP is pathetic so we haven’t got a lot to lose there. And if he costs nothing to get but some money, the Oilers should take the chance.

Who says they aren’t looking for the next Hejda as well? Don’t have to be mutually exclusive…

The Oilers have until next spring to sign Martindale, Blain, Davidson, et al. Players re-enter the draft if they are not signed within 2 years, hence the nervousnous around the last minute Lander signing recently.

dammit gcw, beat me to it :p

We only drafted Martindale and Davidson in 2010, so we have their rights until June of next year and they re-enter the draft unless we sign them beforehand (which we undoubtedly will) so don’t worry Broiler, we’ve plenty of time. Same with Pelss, Blain, Bunz and Czerwonka. Kellen Jones is NCAA so we have his rights until he finishes his time at Quinnipiac (likely another 2/3 years). Whilst other 2010 draftees Pitlick, Hamilton and Marincin were signed this year with still another year before they actually have to be signed, those three are the most likely to be playing in OKC next year.

On a side note, will be interesting to see whether Toni Rajala stays in Finland next year or comes over and plays in OKC/Stockton. He’s signed and has fulfilled his military service so no reason he can’t come over unless management think it will be better for him to stay over there another year. Kid seems to get lost in the shuffle sometimes.

Thanks i was worried because I Knew Davidson and Martindale both are eligible to play in the AHL next year, and thought that might affect signing time.
