Sharks vs. Kings Scoring Chances - Game 4

Photo

When that shark bites with his teeth, dear
Scarlet billows they begin to spread

--Frank Sinatra, "Mack the Knife"

The scarlet billows are the sign that the Kings are bleeding out.  For the second game in the series, Brad Richards' Swedish cousin was the Kings' best center.  And while it's exciting to see an unknown step into the void left by Anze Kopitar's injury, Richardson is getting little help.  Kopitar was a power-versus-power forward and Jarret Stoll's new role as power guy isn't working out.  He's -11 in scoring chance differential in three games.  Michal Handzus, the other center tasked with playing a power role is -11 in four games.  Meanwhile, Richardson is now +7 CD for the series.  The Kings have no one to play the toughs and Murray has no options.

San Jose - Best and Worst

Top ES Forward:  Kyle Wellwood +2

Bottom ES Forward:  Logan Couture -6

Top ES Defenseman:  Ian White, Jason Demers, Marc-Edouard Vlasic EVEN

Bottom ES Defenseman:  Dan Boyle -9

Dan Boyle wasn't happy with his +9 in game three, so he chose to even that out with his -9.  Logan Couture had his worst playoff game as a Shark with his -6 and 0 CF.

The Sharks have developed a habit of trying to break out up the middle in traffic.  Ryane Clowe and Dany Heatley seem particularly bad at this lately and against better teams, the Sharks are going to get their tails kicked if they continue those lazy center breakouts.

Top ES Forward:  Brad Richardson, Wayne Simmonds +8

Bottom ES Forward:  Dustin Brown -2

Top ES Defenseman:  Drew Doughty, Willie Mitchell +5

Bottom ES Defenseman:  Matt Greene, Rob Scuderi +1

Brad Richardson was +8 and Wayne Simmonds was +8.  They absolutely dominated as Richardson returned to his game two form as his line did well against everything the Sharks could counter with.  The Kings have three third centers right now and that's doing them in.

Two goals, those from Willie Mitchell and Jason Williams, were not recorded as scoring chances.  It's the first game I've ever tracked in which more than one goal has not been labeled a scoring chance.
