Kings v. Stars - Scoring Chances

There has been some talk at The Copper and Blue about the Dallas Stars being overrated early on in the season. Although they were winning games, the team wasn't actually that good at controlling the play, especially at even strength, and over the last couple of months, those deficiencies have begun to show up in the results, especially with key contributors like Brad Richards and Nicklas Grossman on the injured list. And that, my friends, is what makes the latest Kings loss so galling. Outchanced and outscored by one of the poorest teams still involved in the playoff chase? It doesn't get much worse than that.

There are plenty of things to point at as deficient in this game. Drew Doughty didn't have one of his finer efforts, and was the man who turned the puck over at the offensive blueline on the Stars tying goal. The Kings were gifted an extended power play when Steve Ott was sent off for spearing, but they couldn't score. But most disappointing of all for me was the play of Ryan Smyth. On the second Dallas goal, Smyth was caught standing around as his check skated past him and put the puck away. Before that, Smyth had been losing battles along the wall, and on one occasion had the (fantastic) colour commentator justly blasting him for failing to get the puck deep at the offensive blueline, which led to a Dallas rush the other way. His group was solidly outchanced on the night and since I've been watching, I'm sad to say that Smytty just hasn't looked good. I really hope that changes because this Oiler fan doesn't need any more reasons to be depressed.

After the jump, I'll put up the scoring chances (note: the Kings first goal by Mitchell - a floater from the point - wasn't counted as a scoring chance), and later today I'll have the GDT up for the Kings and Red Wings. The last time these teams met the Red Wings smoked the Kings. Hopefully today's game has a different outcome. The game starts at 5:30 p.m. MST, which is a half hour after the Oilers start and should make for a fun night of hockey.

For those who'd like a definition: a scoring chance is defined as a clear play directed toward the opposing net from a dangerous scoring area - loosely defined as the top of the circle in and inside the faceoff dots, though sometimes slightly more generous than that depending on the amount of immediately-preceding puck movement or screens in front of the net. Blocked shots are generally not included but missed shots are. A player is awarded a scoring chance anytime he is on the ice and someone from either team has a chance to score. He is awarded a "chance for" if someone on his team has a chance to score and a "chance against" if the opposing team has a chance to score. Finally, a big thanks to Vic Ferrari for making the whole damn thing possible with his awesome scripts.
