Number That May Only Interest Me - 1

In the 25th game of his injury-plagued season, Sioux City Musketeers defenseman and Oilers' prospect Troy Hesketh finally recorded his first point.  Hesketh recorded a second assist on the second goal of the game in a 6-3 win over the Lincoln Stars.  A strong finish to the 2010-2011 season would be a relief for Hesketh as he has suffered through a concussion and having his scholarship to Wisconsin dropped

Hesketh will either head to the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings, who own his CHL rights, or find another scholarship offer.  I know of at least two NCAA coaches who have reached out to Hesketh to talk about his future as an NCAA player, but those discussions were hampered by Hesketh's long recovery.  Hesketh, the 71st overall pick in the 2009 draft,  turns 20 in July and needs to make up some ground on his peer group and quickly.

saying that he needs to make up ‘some’ ground is huge understatement

I’d be happy to see him playing for the Oil Kings next season. Would give him plenty of opportunities to play. He’d be able to fill Van de Mosselaer’s overage spot too.

true that…but lets see where he fits though. he wont be more than a second pairing D. Rienhart and Pysyk form the top pairing…maybe with Lowe he can form second pairing.
I guess that essentially means taking over VdM’s spot

I am excited for Rienhart the most of this group. and his pairing with Pysyk will be really good. Rienhart was so good this season! If his development continues where it left off this season, I will surprised if he is not a top 10 pick next year

Sum: Do you think they’ll be splitting up Pysyk and Lowe? They’ve been mighty effective.

The Oil Kings have scored 235 goals and allowed 235; Mark Pysyk is +31 and Keegan Lowe +32. One of the guys connected with the org told me the Pysyk/Lowe pairing have been logging the tough minutes – “watch them shut down Schenn tonight” were his exact words – and sure enough they did play a lot against Schenn & Hamilton that night. (Lots of tough minutes to go around when playing the Blades, of course.) They ended up -1 on the night, and Lowe took the critical penalty when he really decked Schenn with a heavy cross check in the late going, but suffice to say he’s not one to back down and that’s mostly a good thing.

Hard not to make comps when you see a stat line like this, though:

I wasn’t a Lowe fan in his first year here. Might have been a little misplaced anger factoring into that to be honest. But I’ve really warmed up to him this season. Night in night out he’s solid. When he gets drafted the word pedigree will be getting tossed around plenty.

the word pedigree and blood lines!

Also wasnt this pairing introduced only after the Reinhart injury? If I am not mistaken, Pysyk and Rienhart was the top pairing.
But i have watched only 2 games this season and none after Reinhart injury.
That said, if the injury doesnt slow him down, i can see Rienhart emerging as the number 2 d man on the team. Defense will be a strong suit of this team. just throwing this out: it can be something like philly top 4 where either pairing is more than capable of handling the toughs.

But … but …. but how can you be angry at a guy who won five Cups in Edmonton?

Which is a good thing because if not I’d have a very unhealthy hate for the guy. But the Cups reduce the hate to just anger.

Lowe was -16 last year, and -8 at the end of October this season. Since then he’s been +40. Hard not to warm to that. He has been solid.

If Hesketh was a CHL player, I would be surprised if he was signed, and he’d likely have to reenter the draft. So he’s a bit lucky in that he still has college as an option and some chance to earn an ELC.

And the Oilers might force the issue, but I doubt the Oil Kings would be overly eager to use one of their overager spots on possibly the worst player in the USHL. Plus they’re already carrying Cameron Abney who would likely struggle even in the ECHL next year.

by Double DD on Mar 8, 2011 11:16 AM MST reply actions

I thought Abney already was an overage player. The rule is “turns 20 during the season” I believe and he turns 20 during the Memorial Cup. Maybe I just really want Abney gone.

My understanding is the rule is the same as WJHC eligibility, namely “turns 20 before Jan 1”. So anyone born in ’91 will be overage next season, not this.

Damn I’m really tired of watching him. He reminds me of JF Jacques in that you see glimpses of what he could be but too often he’s something completely different.

Hesketh will play exactly as many games in the NHL as I have.
