Number That May Only Interest Me - 2.114

2.114

When he was 20 years old, Theo Peckham played the most difficult competition available. Jonathan Willis calculated Springfield's quality of competition for the 2008-2009 season and Theo Peckham led the way with a 2.114 rating. Not only was Peckham facing the toughest competition, he was heavily relied upon for the Falcons' penalty kill.

During his time in Manchester this season, Colten Teubert played on the third pairing and as demonstrated by Tyler Dellow, played the fewest short-handed minutes of any Monarchs' defender.

I'd love to see Teubert turn into a long-time NHL defender, but management believes Teubert is only a 5th defenseman at the next level.  It's worth recognizing Colten Teubert is well behind Theo Peckham's development curve.

Well to be fair, Falcons were a shitty team with no defensive strength. Tuebert played on a deep blue-line. An argument can be made that Peckham was a defecto #1 defensman on the club and maybe its better that Tuebert was brought around slowly.
The fact that Tuebert was on the ice with a minute to go when OKC needed a goal is an encouraging sign

2008-09 would have been Peckham’s 21 year old season and his second year as a pro. So we really can’t tell how they compare developmentally until we see how Teubert does next year in OKC on a blueline that will be much thinner than Manchester’s.

You are right….I did not go to check that.
That was his second season.
I am waiting on the next qoc update from Scott too see what minutes Tuebert is playing for OKC

This comparison is a bit unfair. Peckham was 21 (for most of the season) and in his second year pro in 2008-09, and you haven’t presented any evidence about what Peckham was doing in 2007-08. It seems like a bit of a leap to assume that Peckham was playing toughs in the AHL as a rookie. It may be that Teubert is behind where Peckham was in his first year pro, but I don’t think you’ve presented much in the way of relevant evidence.

Further, that Dan Barnes quote is pretty meaningless, and may not reflect the opinion of management (for instance, they may project that as his floor). His source isn’t even willing to put his name behind the comment, which suggests to me that he may not be telling (or even know) the whole truth.

Derek you would find out the Colten Teubert came back on Nov 15/2010 (wrist injury) and was pair with Hickey (which would have him playing the second defensive pairing) up to beginning of Jan/2011. He then bounced between the second- third pairing, depending who was a healthy scratch. Hickey was pair with Voynov to make the number one pairing. Tyler Dellow has a piss poor evaluation, when he has very little data to support his theory. The Monarchs were also stock full of good defensive prospects, from Voynov, Hickey, Campbell, and Muzzin. Hickey, Campbell , Muzzin and Teubert were all healthy scratches at one time or another as the Monarchs coach like to rotate his young defense.

Springfield had a poor team with little defense and little choice to play Peckham, because he was probably the best they had. Manchester has a good defense and can afford to bring their young defense more slowly.

Perhaps we should just wait and see how he finishes out the season in the Oilers’ system before declaring Teubert’s upside or downside? Maybe even wait until the middle of next season. Alzner took longer than anyone expected to make the Caps and he seems to be doing just fine this season. Patience is required here.

Let’s just hope the Oilers management are managing the kid’s expectations for next year (back in the A) and that the OKC coaching staff are giving the kid lots of attention to see what he can become.

I suspect that in Manchester he was not used to his potential due to his injury. Manchester came flying out the gate and has had a pretty good season, and had little need to really adjust the chemistry. When he came back, he fit in where he was useful.

In OK, he will be given far more opportunity than in Manchester, especially with Plante up, Chorney injured.

Next year, our blue line will really have some depth for and there will be a need to fight for a position on the blue line.
