Number That May Only Interest Me - $53,265,834
| $53,265,834 |
The Calgary Flames already have $53,265,834 committed towards the 2011-12 salary cap. That money is committed to 16 players and does not include Ales Kotalik's $3 million salary. If the Flames were to use the buyout period to rid themselves of Ales Kotalik, they would be on the hook for $1 million in 2011-12. That leaves Jay Feaster $5,134,166 to sign 7 players to round out the roster. They have no restricted free agents to re-sign, but Curtis Glencross, Alex Tanguay and Brendan Morrison are all unrestricted free agents.
Glencross is the key, believed to be seeking a contract worth $3 million annually. He's been a primary driver of play during his time in Calgary and would be missed by the Flames. With the cap set to increase somewhere between $2 million and $3 million in 2011-2012, signing Glencross would leave the Flames with ~$5 million to sign 6 replacement players, or ~$6 million if they choose to keep Ales Kotalik and assign him to the AHL.

It’s rumored that Langkow’s career is over, so that gets some money off their cap. The summer cap is going to be around $66 million, so that gives them plenty of room to sign Glencross, then wait until training camp when Langkow and Kotalik would come off.
Still, that team is so terribly managed. My guess is that Glencross gets a 7 year contract.
How do 35+ contracts work?
Does a player have to be 35+ when the contract is signed or does the clause become active when the player turns 35 even in the middle of contract?
Langkow turns 35 in Sept…
The player needs to be 35+ when the contract starts (at least that’s how I read it; Paul Holmgren might disagree). At any rate, Langkow’s contract does not (and will not) count as a 35+ contract.

Throw Brule in too
If Calgary had any picks or prospects I’d suggest Cogliano for Stajan + Futures.
Lets try anyways:
Cogliano, 31st, 91st
for Stajan & this year’s 1st
Ya got it, use it
I typed the exact same idea earlier in the week.
But instead of Stajan, I typed Olesz.
Both good two-way, overpaid players.
Cap space, its an asset
