Kings v. Ducks - Scoring Chances

Teemu Selanne was a scoring chance machine.

I remember Jack Johnson and Rob Scuderi looking bad in this game, much like I remember them looking bad in several other games, but even though those two ended up in the red, the numbers are pointing to a different defense pairing going through some struggles: Drew Doughty and Willie Mitchell. The only play from them that really stands out in my memory is a bouncing puck that Doughty let eat him up at the line. It led to a breakaway, but Jonathan Quick made one of his many stellar saves to bail the young defender out. And that's it. But by the numbers, well let's just say that the puck was often in the wrong end of the ice with those two out there.

Another group that was outchanced badly was the Kings' top line, which was been struggling for a couple of games in a row now, and given the lack of outchancing from the rest of the lineup on most nights, the Kings won't win many games if that continues. I thought that Dustin Penner, in particular, was a lackluster, but it's not something you'd have noticed if you weren't following him. There were no big mistakes, but the big man wasn't as involved along the boards as he has been previously.

Some other brief observations include more strong play from Matt Greene, Lubomir Visnovsky playing a wonderful game, more awful play on the PP, more good penalty killing, more poor officiating (the call on Ponikarovsky was very poor), and more diving from Dustin Brown. The Kings next game is against the Avalanche tomorrow afternoon. The start is at 2:00, and I'm looking forward to being on the right side of a blowout.

For those who'd like a definition: a scoring chance is defined as a clear play directed toward the opposing net from a dangerous scoring area - loosely defined as the top of the circle in and inside the faceoff dots, though sometimes slightly more generous than that depending on the amount of immediately-preceding puck movement or screens in front of the net. Blocked shots are generally not included but missed shots are. A player is awarded a scoring chance anytime he is on the ice and someone from either team has a chance to score. He is awarded a "chance for" if someone on his team has a chance to score and a "chance against" if the opposing team has a chance to score. Finally, a big thanks to Vic Ferrari for making the whole damn thing possible with his awesome scripts.
