Kings v. Blue Jackets - Scoring Chances

Once again, the Kings were outchanced by a significant margin, but for the second time in a row, they were able to come away with the win. But this one was quite different from the game against Detroit in that the Kings were in control of the game after taking an early lead and then sat back, especially once they were up by two. The strategy was effective (they won the game, didn't they), but it did make for some ugly scoring chance numbers.

One line that didn't get beat up at evens was the trio of Dustin Penner, Anze Kopitar, and Justin Williams. Interestingly, they didn't play a whole lot at evens either, instead getting a lot of ice time on the power play. They were in on each of the four Kings' goals, and generally looked pretty dominant. It's a group that can match up well against any team in the league; the question is whether or not the rest of the team will be able to get it done. For the Jackets, Rick Nash was really getting things done in this one. He didn't score, but he was around the net and creating chances all night long.

Jonathan Bernier had a pretty good game, but did allow the one stinker that wasn't included among the chances. Still, two goals allowed on sixteen chances is a fine showing. Four on ten chances? Not so much. None of the goals were really "on" Steve Mason in this game, but if a team is going to win, it needs the goalie to make more of the saves that aren't gimmes.

The Kings play again tonight at 6:00, and I'll have a GDT up, although I'll again miss out on the live action. Still a game behind on the scoring chances too, but that will hopefully be rectified before the game against St. Louis on the 17th.

Star-divide

For those who'd like a definition: a scoring chance is defined as a clear play directed toward the opposing net from a dangerous scoring area - loosely defined as the top of the circle in and inside the faceoff dots, though sometimes slightly more generous than that depending on the amount of immediately-preceding puck movement or screens in front of the net. Blocked shots are generally not included but missed shots are. A player is awarded a scoring chance anytime he is on the ice and someone from either team has a chance to score. He is awarded a "chance for" if someone on his team has a chance to score and a "chance against" if the opposing team has a chance to score. Finally, a big thanks to Vic Ferrari for making the whole damn thing possible with his awesome scripts.

Yeah, he didn’t have a good game. One of the Jackets’ first chances came when Scuderi threw the puck into the middle of the ice from the boards in the defensive zone. I don’t remember any other particularly egregious gaffes off the top of my head, but I’m confident that he’s not all passenger here.
