Number That May Only Interest Me: $16,678,334

$16,678,334

The above number represents the Florida Panthers total cap commitment for the upcoming season.

The Panthers have 9 players under contract for the 2011-2012 season including five forwards: David Booth, Evgeni Dadonov, Rostislav Olesz, Scott Timmins and Stephen Weiss. Only three defensemen have a contract in place: Jason Garrison, Dmitri Kulikov and Mike Weaver. Goaltender Scott Clemmensen is also signed through next season.

The Panthers have seven restricted free agents who much be signed, including forwards Nicklas Bergfors, Steve Bernier, Shawn Matthias, Michal Repik, Mike Santorelli, Jack Skille and defenseman Keaton Ellerby.

Even with significant raises, those seven contracts should total somwhere between $10 million and $13 million per year, giving the Panthers 16 signed players totaling $26.6 million - $29.6 million in cap space. Even if Erik Gudbranson and his $3.375 million cap hit make the team, Dale Tallon will have to sign six additional roster players for somewhere between $13 million and $16 million just to reach the salary floor.

Exactly. I expect Calgary, New Jersey, and Philadelphia are calling Dale Tallon every day to see if they’ve seen that great play by Niklas Hagman/Brian Rolston/Matt Walker.

Maybe he’s hoping to sign some key free agents and cut the rebuild time in half? I mean ‘come to Florida and don’t pay taxes with some travel’ seems like a better deal than, oh say, ‘come to Northern Alberta, get taxed to death and travel more than anyone else’ doesn’t it? I’m not sure if his plan involves signing other teams crap or trading for them. But this goes back to my silly ‘it doesn’t take 6 years to rebuild a team’ theory.

Florida is so destitute that those free agent contracts will be ending by the time any of their young players are actually any good.

The obvious answer being: Sheldon Souray!

What would it take to get Tallon to take him?

I think Florida will want him. The $900k works for Florida and Souray is a sellable name as far as being a real live NHL defenseman goes.

Barring some bizarro world bidding war for Souray (in a world with GM’s like Sather such a thing is always an option) a 5th is what gets it done.

I’m guessing the difference between his cap hit and his salary.

Yes. For a team like Florida – where being competitive next year isn’t an option – guys like Souray are gold… well… okay… silver.

Nikolai Khabibulin! He doesn’t even have to play for the panthers to count on the cap

by Geowal on Mar 15, 2011 9:36 PM MDT reply actions
