Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

If I were the Edmonton GM, after Schenn, I would ask for Wayne Simmonds, then Kyle Clifford, then Andrei Loktionov, then Jonathan Bernier, then Viatcheslav Voynov, then Tyler Toffoli, then Forbort, then Martin Jones, then Oscar Moller, then Nicolas Deslauriers, then Maxim Kitsyn, then Muzzin, then Linden Vey, and then Teubert. Probably Steve Tambellini didn't want some of those guys, but is there any way Teubert was higher than tenth on the wish list?

So we screwed the pooch on this one? who knew?

Rebuild is a convenient excuse for GMs who dont wish to do their jobs

To be fair, Schenn, Simmonds, Clifford, Bernier, Lokitionov, Toffoli, and Forbort were not on the table (at least not for Penner) and I think you guys wanted a defenseman. And if we gave you Voinov, Hickey, or Martinez I don’t think you get the 1st round pick. I don’t either team lost or won this deal outright.

Trust us on this one, we lost. Penner is a fantastic player who is going to fit perfectly for you guys, and in return we got a mediocre first and a mediocre prospect. If the Oilers couldn’t have got Voinov and a 1st, they shouldn’t have made the trade. It’s not like they had to move the guy.

If they weren’t on the table, then we shouldn’t have made the trade. Holy shit, that was easy!

Yeah but if you don’t you still don’t make the playoffs (probably) next year and you get less at next years deadline because he doesn’t have a year remaining anymore (unless you think he would have re-signed).

the group-think was that both Penner and Hemsky were going against the norm and wished to resign with the Oil.

… but of course we have soooo many free agents just dying for a spot in Edmonton….

I think the rage mainly comes from the fact that Penner DID what he was brought in to do…he scored goals for us. An Oiler doing what he was brought to Edmonton to do? Hot-fucking-comodity right there.

Penner was our only power forward… one of our half-empty handful of players that can consistently move the puck in the general “not up my own ass” direction.
So after the failings of Tambo’s magic bullets, Lowe’s old fridge looked better and better. We got accustomed to Penner… took him for granted, and now even as he STILL helps the team by getting us that punishing defender that we lacked since Smith, Penner still doesn’t get the respect he deserves.

it made me upset beyond belief to watch CBC’s clucking chickens talk about how “Penner probably wasn’t the guy” for LA and knocking him for taking shifts off and laziness and slow foot speed.

fucking bullshit

Penner is an elite power forward, he controled the rate of play for the majority of game’s he suited up for the Oil. He scored more real goals than our new rookie phenoms put together. He kept up with a fast pace young team, and a not quite as fast pace but empty-minded joke of a team the year before.
He was a great Oiler, good enough to inspire an arguably logical rant from this troll atleast.

Penner is great and all, but how can you say he scored more goals than all of the rookies combined? He didn’t have more goals than Hall alone at the time of the trade…

by bhommy on Mar 4, 2011 4:57 PM MST up reply actions

after the rage subsided maybe my comment was a stress induced exaduration.

What I meant to imply was that Penner’s goals came from his own hard work, rarely were they empty netters or against inferior opposition by any measurable degree.

Considering what he accomplished playing without a true centre, Penner has upside as well.

Nut – if they were going to deal Penner, then they should have waited for the draft (when other teams might have entered the bidding) or July 1, when everyone has cap space. Two more solid shots at a better return. No need to wait for the next deadline to make a deal.
