Zherdev v. Jacques

It can't be just me thinking that it would have been worth the "risk" of losing someone like Jacques to waivers to see 20 games of Zherdev?

Even though it would have been a good move for the Oilers, I have a hard time imagining Lowe and Tambellini picking up a pending UFA at this point even if that player was free to acquire and probably affordable next year. People might start asking questions if the younger players face competition from a player like Zherdev.

If not the Oilers, I have a hard time understanding out why a playoff-battling team with cap space didn’t take a shot at Zherdev. I was looking at the Flyers’ forwards at behindthenet and he seemed at least comparable to Briere to me. Surely Pittsburgh could have taken a shot rather than trading for Kovalev, or the Habs could stop playing Travis Moen or Jeff Halpern on the wing in their top 6.

I don’t have the foggiest idea how Svatos got picked ahead of Zherdev, or why the Habs didn’t grab Zherdev. Well, I do have an idea — PG and JM seem to not very much like Zherdev’s kind of, um “free spirit”, but from a strict hockey standpoint, why they don’t acquire a strong ES forward with a history of playing effectively with Scott Gomez is completely beyond me. Unless they have a deal for a top-6 forward almost done, I suppose.

From what I have read, Zherdev is a nightmare in the lockerroom. Some reports out of Philly have him so lazy that he is now out of shape. Some of these reports may be exagerated because he refuses to talk to the media, but where there is that much smoke, there is some fire. Nobody gearing up for a playoff run wants that in thier locker room.

Maybe he misses Russia. Edmonton is more like Russia than Columbus, New York or Philly! I guess we’ll never know now if any of those rumours are true, but I think it could have been an easy and cheap way to find out.
