Edmonton Oilers Organizational Depth Chart
One of the reasons that we do a twice yearly Top 25 Under 25 is to give readers insight into the organization as a whole. Most fans are intimately familiar with the NHL team, and have heard of the higher-end prospects in the organization but may not get the opportunity to view the entire depth chart. After the jump, I've created an organizational depth chart using the Oilers and Barons' depth charts combined with our Top 25 Under 25 rankings.

It’s criminal to see Strudwick above Belle.
Does he call it Luongo underwear?

Yeah, I know his job is to get the Barons into the playoffs, but it seems like some additional time in the NHL on the bottom pairing could have shown whether he is capable of playing the $550,000 7th defender role.
They’re better off paying $800,000 for someone out of the Mottau / Weaver / Pothier tree, but it does seem like one of those missed opportunities.

Omark and Paajarvi are strange cases. Omark is listed at LW and has played LW in the SEL, KHL and AHL. He’s playing RW right now, and I believe he did the same at the world championships.
Paajarvi is listed at LW and has played both LW and RW, and according to our intrepid Swedish interviewer, Johan, Paajarvi has played his best hockey on the right side.
I just listed Omark at his listed position.

Interesting to see the lack of elite talent beyond Eberle and Hemsky at RW, which is why it would be a big mistake to trade the latter. That said, I believe Penner and Paajarvi are capable of playing either wing. Are we safely assuming now that Pitlick is at RW and not C? Him and Rajala in that case would be potential strong skilled RWs (Rajala’s a longshot though).
@SumOil: yeah I thought the prospect ratings were pretty good on the whole, they seem to agree with a lot of what has been said here, except for Chorney’s entry where they fail to mention his massive improvement from this year to last.
@Matt.N: I believe Omark is a natural LW, but seems capable of playing either when needed.

Omark has been capable thus far and Penner is capable, but given his all around game, it’s better to keep him on the left side.

Who knows? He’s played the entire season on the wing and claims to like it over there.

You need to take this depth chart with a grain of salt. Brule has played almost exclusively RW, but he is up as a centre. Omark has played RW and Penner can play their too. Gagner can also play RW. There are lots of RW options if Hemsky goes.
Makes you wonder what the Oilers do on draft day and Larsson is gone off the board and Landeskog is still available. Do they draft another LW because he is the best player available (assuming they think he is)?
If you take Pitlick out of the mix at centre, its a pretty scary picture down the middle. Some decent defensive and two-way centres, but no real point producers. The Oil better hope Martindale is the real deal based on that chart. Otherwise we are building the Anaheim Ducks of the Kariya/Selanne days with Horcoff as our Steve Rucchin.
What are your criteria for these rankings? It strikes me unlikely the Martin Marincin is, at this moment, a better hockey player than Theo Peckham. On the other hand, Taylor Hall obviously promises to turn out as a much better player than Dustin Penner. Is it some combination of current ability and upside you’re using?

It looks like if Hemsky rumours pan out they feel there are LW that will pull their weight at RW. There are a lot of options at the wings.
The D to me looks like it will be solid if unspectacular in the next few years even with no franchise guy. There is offense and puck moving players, could use another solid banger right side (maybe Plante but tougher would be better ) – it’s passable.
For me #1 centre has to be highest priority over the other gaps. Only Martindale really has the tool kit to be that type of player in the current mix, but a long shot for sure. It would be a huge mistake to address the stud D and not the stud C before the sweet picks go away.
I truly hope they don’t think Gagner will grow into that. He could be quite a good player, but there are too many top opposing centres that would hand him his lunch, having his hockey smarts and speed/size.
Thanks for the chart.
