Theo Peckham or Taylor Chorney? You Decide.
Theo Peckham has struggled to stay in a lineup filled with a career AHLer, a player with 35 games of NHL experience coming in to 2011-12, an enormous 3rd-overall pick bust and a very old and slow, but large defender. Chorney couldn't even make the team. But after watching Peckham play for the first two months, I'm not sure Peckham deserves to be on the team, even when taking the current injuries into account.
Tom Renney has given him the easiest minutes he's been able to, yet Peckham has been overwhelmed. Tonight, tonight was a different level of bad. He was directly responsible for 1st goal with a terriblly ill-advised pinch that stopped neither the man nor the puck. On the very next penalty kill, Peckham ran to the far (side side) boards to finish a hit and took himself 30 feet out of position, leaving no defenseman in front of Khabibulin.
On the fourth goal, Jeff Petry moved down the slot to receive a pass from Jordan Eberle, but Eberle lost the puck, then dove for the puck (it wasn't a penalty). Peckham never realized that Petry pinched. As the puck came out of the zone, Peckham looked the puck carrier straight in the belly. When the puck was moved over to Winchester, Peckham looked up for the first time and saw Petry wasn't there. At that moment on the replay, Peckham's "OH NO" face was plainly visible. It was terrible ice awareness.
After watching Theo Peckham play the worst game of his career tonight, I'm left to wonder - Who is a better defenseman right now, Taylor Chorney or Theo Peckham? I'm not talking about potential, skillset or last season, rather, I'm talking about this moment. Is the Theo Peckham we've seen for the last six weeks better than Taylor Chorney?

Theo vs. Tay. the subclass of the successful defender. Nevertheless, I would opt for Theo or equal to look for another alterative. Chorney is too soft, it also attracts the injury luck.
Should the Oilers to try their luck and get Chorney in the NHL, for him to then have to re waiver (if he is not injured). I think not.
An alternative would be for up to 10 games Plante, he needs the NHL air to develop.
Why does too soft matter if he can get the job done?

I think the better option would be to recall Plante, he at least looked respectable in his one game up with the protected peckham minutes.
I am with you. I would rather give Plante a chance over Chorney. Problem is if you have to put him with Sutton, you are screwed. No footspeed in that pairing.
If the Oilers can get Motin’s contract off the books, what about signing and calling up Montgomery or Tupulov rather than Chorney? Montgomery can pass and yet has the size to handle NHL-sized forwards and Tupulov can clear the front of the net.
Pair Plante with Potter.
At least the jokes will write themselves.

Hadn’t thought of that. that’s classic.
More seriously, I would rather see:
Gilbert – Smid (pairing works)
Tulupov – Potter (puck mover and clear the front of the net guy)
Montgomery – Sutton (puck mover and clear the front of the net guy)
Peckham in the pressbox for a while.
The thing about Tulupov is that he can’t stay in the lineup in the AHL. I can’t help but think he’d get absolutely demolished at the NHL level.

Is that due to Nelson rotating bodies to keep everyone in game shape or because he sucks? I had the sense it was because of the former. Could be wrong though.
Besides, how would that be any worse?
There’s some rotation happening, but a bunch of guys have played every game. Teubert and Plante have played every game (that they haven’t been in Edmonton), and Montgomery and Helmer have been in the lineup very consistently as well.

There might be some raw ability there, but it’s going to take some time to develop.

At the very least, he might hit Eager again.

I wouldn’t waste an NHL contract on Tulupov at this point. I would like to see if Montgomery could hold his own at the NHL level though.
The Edmonton Oilers - All we do is win!!
They’re actually lucky he couldn’t find a job. He’s probably better than Barker.

Monti would be good for a two-way deal. Maybe he gets a chance?

This is a bit like asking if you’d prefer a poke in the eye or a kick in the ass. Sadly, given the injuries, it’s quite possible that we will have both of them in the team for the next game, probably as a pairing.
Which one is the kick in the ass because I’ll take that everytime over a poke in the eye!

I’m pretty sure I have one of those already too…

Building a strong defence
With or without Chorney or Peckham, even with everyone healthy, this team is thin on defence. Khabi stole a few games, but in the long run this defence is just not good enough.
Come draft time, at the top of the first round the team stocks up on forwards.
This year with the strength of the draft being dmen, there is an opportunity to rebuild this defence. We’ll see if we do that or just add more forwards.
I think if you get into the top 2, those Russian kids are too good to pass up.
Maybe if you can get a good offer from #3-5 for that pick and something else you might be able to take it.

Drafting in the top 2 would make it interesting, that’s for sure. But it had better be because the team lucked out and moved from 6th to 2nd.
Even then, I would think about moving down. Sooner or later you gotta address this defence, and if defensve prospects take longer to mature then waiting is pure folly.
Going to be tough to catch the Jackets and the IslAvs.

On the third Ottawa goal (the winner) Peckham did such a sensational job of screening Khabibulin that I would contemplate putting him in front of the other guy’s net on our powerplay. Khabibulin took most of the blame for that one but I’m pretty convinced he never saw a thing except Peckham’s backside.
