Johan Motin Signs With Timra IK
Johan Motin was interviewed during the offseason, saying that he would head to Sweden if he were to be demoted to the ECHL this season. He seems to have kept his promise, as he signed a deal for the remainder of the season with Timra IK of the SEL. With the demotion of Colten Teubert and the reclaiming of Taylor Chorney, Motin hasn't seen action since the Barons Kid's Day Game last Tuesday. In ten games with the Barons, Motin had two assists during the Barons 10-1 win over the Texas Stars, and was a +4 for the season

Does this represent a complete break between him and the Oilers organization, or do the Oil still have some sort of rights to his services should he return to North America?
In any case, Timrå could really use the help about now; they’re glued to the foot of the Elitserien table.
Depends on whether the Oilers have terminated the contract or simply assigned him to Timra. It looks like the latter (I haven’t seen him go on unconditional waivers), which means that his contract still counts against the limit (of 50), and that the Oilers will retain his RFA rights until this summer. At that point, they’d need to offer him a qualifying offer to hold onto him, and that seems unlikely.

If this is the consequence of re-acquiring Chorney, we should have let St. Louis keep him. Chroney has no shot why Motin was playing better this season and at least was a long shot
Motin is bruteskies…..good riddance

Even with better play this season, I don’t think Motin was any more likely to be able to play NHL games than Chorney. I’d prefer to have Chorney in the AHL: he’ll help OC far more than Motin and he’s not entirely a terrible player to have for a call-up should injuries really strike.
Agreed that Chorney is probably the better bet.

I know everyone is in a rush to bring prospects into the AHL as soon as possible, but perhaps this wasn’t the best course for Motin.
He came over as a 19 year old and had a respectable 1st season on a bad team. One of his problems is he’s got next to no offense to his game and maybe he was better served staying in the SEL.
He’s still only 22, I wouldn’t write him off yet.
In theory, there is little difference between practice and theory, but in practice there is!

dammit man, he’s 22, so what….he’ll improve from abysmal to terrible at the AHL level if we give him another 3 years, maybe by the time he’s 30 he’ll be all the way up to incompetent

I think you ignored the words I actually wrote and instead viewed them as:
“OMG NOES!!!!!!! HE’S STILL YOUNG AND THIS IS THE WORST MISTAKE EVER!!!!!!!!!!1111”
Lots of defencemen get discarded at 22 only to come back down the road. I’m not saying the Oilers are making a mistake now, rather that they may have made one when they brought him over initially.

Why does every defenseman have to have offense to his game? Its nice, but a couple of stay at home guys who take care of business can be very valuable at the NHL level. Sorry to see him go.
Offense provides an extra back drop of protection. If your GF are low, in order to contribute your GA have to be low as well.
If you are the type of defenceman who is putting up 5 or 6 points over the course of a season, that’s tough to make up for defensively.
Even Jason Smith was putting up 15-20 points per season.

I would put 15-20 points as effectively no offence in a world of second assists. My point though, is that there seems to be less and less defencemen that actually know how to play defence. I would take a 10-20 point guy on my 3rd pairing who does know how to take car of his own zone, then say, Cam Barker and his ilk.
I think we’re saying the same things to be honest.
I’m not talking a lot of offense, but a little bit helps.
I don’t think, at this time anyways, that Motin has enough offense in his to contribute in the NHL. It doesn’t have to be much more, but it has to be more than what he’s done so far.
