Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' First NHL Goal Places Him In Lofty Company

Star-divide

At 15:05 of the third period in the Edmonton Oilers opening game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the game-tying goal.  It was his first NHL goal in his first NHL game.  49 players have been selected first overall in NHL history and Nugent-Hopkins became the 11th first overall draft choice to score a goal in his first game.

He joins Buffalo's Gilbert Perreault, Long Island's Billy Harris and John Tavares, Philadelphia's Mel Bridgman and Eric Lindros, Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux, Minnesota's Mike Modano, Quebec's Mats Sundin, Columbus' Rick Nash, and Washington's Alexander Ovechkin on the list.

Nugent-Hopkins is keeping some lofty company: all of the aforementioned players went on to lengthy NHL careers and eight of them are in the Hall of Fame or are headed to the Hall of Fame.  Not that there's any pressure on the young man.

Maybe there is something to that Modano comp after all?

The funny thing is that RNH doesn’t act like he is under any significant pressure. By the way, I stand by my earlier prediction for his first 9 games: 1G and 4 helpers for 5 points. If he stays on and stays healthy, then that will be something. He strikes me as the one, who can be, at the very least, “an assist per game” kind of player with some games in which he scores and add more assists. You do the math for 63 and 70 and 81 games…

He’s not, really. He’s being paid $3 million to play on a team who expects to finish 22nd or worse.

he’s not under that much pressure really….not as much as a guy like Brule

Really what could RNH do that would cause the oilers not to resign him in 3 years? Barring devastating injury, like being blown up by an IED

Didn’t Rick Rypien also score in his first NHL game?

Just sayin’.
