Oilers - Sharks Stats Leftovers

That's a paddlin'.

Dustin Penner - Taylor Hall - Ales Hemsky did some kicking in last night and the target was the Sharks' top line.  The rest of the team didn't fare as well against Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, but it didn't matter.

Star-divide

  • Taylor Hall is enjoying rave reviews from everyone on his play thus far at center.  And while he's looked very good at times, deficiencies exist.  But my question is why is Taylor Hall getting rave reviews and being talked about as the franchise center of the future while playing between Dustin Penner and Ales Hemsky, but when Shawn Horcoff has success at center between Penner and Hemsky, Horcoff is simply a product of his linemates?

Penner, Hall, and Hemsky were just unreal last night. Especially in the 3rd period where they just seemed to create chances at will. Certainly fun to watch.

And why no love for Horcoff – his contract. Some fans seem to dislike that deal so much that they refuse to accept that Horcoff has any value at all. They complain when he doesn’t put up numbers and then give him no credit when he does score. He can’t win.

It’s not the contract, Horcoff gets plenty of credit nowadays, the reason Hall is getting a ton now is because he’s a rookie, and he’s only played two games at C, and already he fits right in with the two best forwards on the roster. How is that not more impressive than a veteran Horcoff playing well with them?

It’s not that it’s not impressive. It is very impressive to watch a guy in his 42nd game play that well. But if you could replay that game with Horcoff doing all the things Hall did last night, more than a couple of fans would give the credit to Hemsky and Penner, saying that Horcoff was just along for the ride.

That’s exactly right.

one is 19 and the other was 29.
Tell me which one gives you more hope?

What does hope have to do with it?

everything…the whole season is based on hope for the future. If Hall is busting his ass and getting the points, then he could be the top line center who everyone has been looking for. Horcoff always seemed like the make shift top line center. And hence his results will always be criticized

by SumOil on Jan 15, 2011 2:56 PM MST up reply actions

Exactly. Hope necessarily informs perception.

jesus christ. brutal night for setoguchi.

by Passive Voice on Jan 14, 2011 1:12 PM MST reply actions

Yeah, especially brutal because he had a couple of chances to score early in the game when he was out against the Oilers fourth line.

That’s easy. Because you are an American site just looking for money. And you are arrogant. So your ‘stats’ have another motive that isn’t hockey.

That was easy.

BOOMshakalaka!

Let’s not be too critical of Hall up the middle yet. Like I’ve stated in the past he’s not very stick in his own zone, and sitckiness is pretty important for the center covering down low.

*sticky = meaning good at covering his defensive responsibility in his own zone

Whoa ho, looks like this guy’s got your number, CNB! Being an American site is the WORST THING IN THE WORLD.

You only constantly break new ground in statistical analysis and provide some of the most insightful coverage of any hockey team anywhere just to MAKE MONEY. This critical thinker sees right through your arrogant ulterior motives. And why not, when you make it so EASY.

Pack it in, folks. You’ve been exposed.

Wait this is American? I demand out immediately.
