Around SBN: Events Cause Mariners To Lose To Rangers

With Ryan Whitney and Jim Vandermeer on the shelf with ankle injuries suffered on the rutted Rexall Place ice, the Oilers have again dipped into the system to recall defenceman Taylor Chorney. The 23-year-old defender endured something of a baptism by fire with the last-place Oilers in last year's second half, but by all accounts has rebounded to play solid hockey with Oklahoma City so far in 2010-11. He has recorded 3-12-15 with an even plus/minus rating, a vast improvement on last season in which he achieved the rare feat of posting a +/- rating of -20 or worse in two different leagues.

Man, the -21 in the NHL was 873rd in the league. Yikes. Hope he can have a good run. Wonder if Plante was given any consideration this go round?

I was expecting plante
As long as he is not paired with 43 it’s all good.

by SumOil on Jan 10, 2011 11:23 AM MST reply actions

really? I’d love to see them paired again. I see the headlines surrounding the sequel to “the shift” possibly being the highlight of the season

by Stephen Sheps on Jan 10, 2011 11:31 AM MST up reply actions

I have to admit that The Shift was a personal highlight of last season. Kind of the poster child of everything that went wrong for the 2009-10 Oilers.

That said, I’m in no hurry to see a do-over.

First, apologies to you Sum, we both FanShotted this news so I deleted yours. Sorry, bud!

I expect the recall will see Chorney play ahead of Strudwick, not with him. As we have seen with earlier recalls of Belle and Petry, the club has tried to keep Struds in the pressbox for the most part and let the call-up play ahead of him. 43 is on the roster long-term and in the line-up as an emergency replacement from time to time, but he’s being used (properly in my opinion) as a #7 defender rather than being forced into the line-up for months on end as happened the last two seasons to not-good effect.

And I’m not sure this has been mentioned (or maybe it’s understood). He’ll meet the team in Dallas for tomorrows game.

Did Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow?

I hope Chorney does well
Exceeds all expectations, in fact
And in doing so, acquires some trade value.

Wow, who’s left playing in Oklahoma? The Oilers are starting to resemble the Barons again.
