Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

Steven Reinprecht is on waivers as per Bob McKenzie. He's not the checking center he once was, but he's an able-bodied veteran and certainly an upgrade on Ryan O`Marra, but at $2,050,000 he's more than twice O`Marra's salary.

you beat me to the punch Derek, I was just about to do a fan-shot on this very idea. I say do it. The team has more than enough cap space and he is an upgrade over O’Marra and Fraser to say the least. Could help the pk and win a few draws, and his current fo% is 51.7. It’s an expensive upgrade, but a useful one, filling exactly the void the team needs. However he is 34 and has another year left on his deal, which leads me to believe that despite his usefulness, he will be avoided like the plague by the Oilers (mis)management team.

that extra year is what will scare GMs away. But if I was the GM i would do it. At the present state of the oilers, it doesnt look like we are going to be competing for playoffs next season either. But if we are and he plays horribly, buyout is always available in summer.

The Oilers were willing to bury $4.5 million in salary in the AHL – another $2 million is peanuts.

why bury $2 Million when they could just waive JFJ? Even if he’s not great, he’s got to be better than that guy.

by Stephen Sheps on Jan 1, 2011 10:58 AM MST up reply actions

JFJ is staying the season whether we like it or not. He will only be sent out in the off-season when we dont give him a QO.

why must you ruin a perfectly good new year’s hangover with your pessimism, Sum?

If only Steve Tambellini listened to logic!

Would he even need to be bought out or waived? They’re losing (hopefully) Fraser next year, why not just put Reinprecht on the fourth line next year as well? Yeah, he’s expensive at $2 million, but they won’t have cap issues next season and he’s gone after that.

Fraser is signed for next year. Well…I am not against having Rienprecht. If he doesnt play well enough or loses out on a role next season, then that can be handled in the off season or pre season. Claiming Rienprecht is not a bad deal at all. Maybe we can wait and see if FLA is going to put him on recall waivers. If not, we could even trade for him giving up Fraser. There are a lot of options…

by SumOil on Jan 1, 2011 4:15 PM MST up reply actions

Not with the next year on the contract. At least wait for recall waivers, and get him at half price. Then perhaps I’m okay with it.

But Horcoff should be back “soon”, and the Oilers are a lottery team. So the tasks at hand are pumping up Cogliano’s value for a trade, and seeing what O’Marra can actually do.

Better to save that cap space for a real difference maker in a salary dump. Reinprecht ultimately doesn’t matter. Why try to finish 25th or 20th? Whitney’s injury sealed a lottery pick. Embrace it.

Once Horcoff is back i don’t think Reinprecht would be needed. Maybe if we work out a deal for Cogliano but Brule can play centre and I would like to see him take more draws as he wins 50%+ O’marra is Frasers replacement.

Would prefer to see Fraser traded or something so we can keep O’marra. Not making the playoffs may as well give the young guys the chance in the NHL. O’marra has looked quite good so far.

But if we want to send him down before the 10game waiver ineligble period ends then Fraser keeps the spot, Reiprecht is only a better option if we can shed frasers salary otherwise we are effectively paying 3m for a fourth line centre
