Around SBN: Watch Out For Cowboys UDFA Tim Benford

Let me ask you, would you want to play for the Edmonton Oilers, for example? [laughter] Let me tell you that when you have a choice and you have something to choose from, you always want to play for a good team.

That's Evgeni Nabokov explaining why he decided to sign with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL. I'd just like to point out that his derision of Edmonton didn't include a single thing about the city itself, the weather, or the fans. It did mention winning though, and with a roster that includes Nabokov, Denis Grebeshkov, Sergei Zubov, Alexei Yashin, and Maxim Afinogenov, I'm pretty sure SKA has a much better chance of winning in the KHL than the Oilers do in the NHL. And if we're really being honest, SKA is probably just the better team too.

Because nothing says “party life” like living in fucking Leningrad.

i think both parties are better off with each other. the last thing the oilers need to do is invest in another aging goalie. as for nabokov, hes better off on a team where he doesnt have to put the stress all on him and try to over extend himself, even if it means playing in russia.

I don’t think there was any discussion of Nabokov coming to the Oilers. He was just using the Oilers as an example of the type of team he wouldn’t want to play for (i.e. a bad team).

Well, while it comes across as an innocent comment, it obviously will infuriate more than one Oilers fan out there… True, on paper that list of players certainly looks better than the current Oilers, and probably will do better statistically than our Oil this year (against other NHL write-offs), I don’t think the KHL can be compared to the “bigs.”

The irony about a guy who always came up short in the playoffs on an excellent team calling out our bottom feeders, playing in an inferior league (mind you), is rather funny. People like to blame Thornton for this, but c’mon, there is only ONE definitive position in hockey. Enjoy your unstable mafia-laden KHL Mr. Nabokov. You’ll find a way to come up short there too!

On a side note, this does not make me instantly a Gerber fan. I don’t expect a Cinderella turn around in Edmonton this year. On the same token, I will never sell out my team.
